I just received an email from United stating:

“You’re close to reaching MileagePlus® Premier® Platinum status for 2012 so we’re offering you the opportunity to achieve it by purchasing the remaining 2011 qualifying miles (EQM) or qualifying segments (EQS/EQP). Since our last weekly update, your 2011 balance is 65894 EQM and 39.0 EQS/EQP. You need an additional 10,000 EQM or 10 EQS/EQP to achieve 2012 Premier Platinum status. Make your purchase now through February 28, 2012. If you purchase the required amount of 2011 EQM or EQS/EQP, the 2012 Premier Platinum status you earn will be effective March 3, 2012 through January 31, 2013. Until then, you’ll enjoy interim status and benefits, effective within two weeks after your purchase. See terms and conditions for details.”

I took the bait, logged into my account, but spit out the hook when I found out it would cost me $1,891 to upgrade. I think that’s way too much for not a lot in return. Here are the benefits and let me know if you think I’m making a mistake.

As a former UA flight attendant, I think you made the right decision, considering the sum. The real difference, – on a personal level when dealing with employees and working out issues – starts at 1k. If you looked at a passenger manifest, you wouldn’t believe the number of 1Ks onboard.

Thanks Tiffany. I believe it – with this status I’m usually number 40 on the upgrade list. However, I used to be 1K in the old days and back then I did alright.

    Hi

But what is you did some shopping with the partners like FTD, suscribed to a wine club …and other things like that, getting the missing miles (some offers give you 30 miles for 1$ spent, 2 shipping with a wine club=5000$…etc..)
Does it work for qualifying or not?
    What do you think?
    If yes, it’s worthy
    excuse my english ;-)
    good luck
    Mira
