Carol Cain

Name: Carol Cain

Occupation: I am fortunate to work as a publisher of a travel and food blog and freelance travel writer. When I am really, really lucky I get to travel to awesome places with my beautiful family in tow.

Hometown: New York, NY

Residence: South Orange, NJ

Website: GirlGoneTravel.com

Twitter: @CarolACain

Facebook: Girl Gone Travel

Pinterest: Girl Gone Travel

Bio: I left a career in public relations. I am now a full-time freelance travel writer and blogger behind the site GirlGoneTravel.com. I live in New Jersey, but will always be a girl from Brooklyn.

How often do you fly: About two to three times a month, not including weekend road trips with the family.

How many countries have you been to? 13

How many continents have you been to? 2

Favorite American city: Aside from my own (New York), I am a huge fan of mountain towns such as Vail in CO and the various towns along the Catskill Mountains.

Favorite international city: Edinburgh, Scotland, second to that would be Dublin Ireland. I am completely in love with that part of the world and its people (sorry, hard to pick one!)

Favorite World Heritage Site: St. Emilion, France. Walking through the town’s center is like walking back in time with its narrow cobble streets and ancient architecture.

Favorite airline: Virgin Atlantic for International flights and Jet Blue for domestic. Love the service and level of attention in both.

Aisle or window: Window. Can’t miss out on those views of the sky!

Favorite U.S. airport: San Francisco. I always look forward to the different exhibits they have going on there.

Favorite international airport: I love the insane energy of Charles de Gualle in Paris.

Favorite hotel: I am huge fan of The Ritz Carlton, but also love what Residence Inn by Marriott does for family travelers.

Do you unpack into the dresser/closet? Or live out of your suitcase? I like to unpack and hang my clothes in the hotel, but have a hard time unpacking when I am home. Still have a suitcase opened in the living room from a week ago.

Favorite cruise line: Norwegian Cruise Line.

Favorite Island: Aruba.

Favorite fancy restaurant: Le Bernadin.

Favorite hole in the wall: Atomic Wings in Brooklyn.

Favorite fruit: Mango.

Favorite food: Thai.

Least favorite food: Haven’t had it yet.

Drink of choice (in the air and on the ground): Champagne (because it’s hard to get a Gin and Tonic on a plane).

Favorite travel movie(s): The Matchmaker with Janneane Garofalo was the first film the made me crave a trip to Ireland. Amelie makes me yearn for France and Love Actually makes even Heathrow seem like a happy place.

Favorite travel show(s): House Hunters International.

Favorite travel book(s): “In The Time of Butterflies” by Julia Alvarez.

Right now I am reading: “Ender’s Game.”

Top 3 favorite travel newsletters/magazines/blogs: Traveling Philosopher, Geotraveler’s Niche, and Beers and Beans.

Favorite travel website(s)—besides JohnnyJet.com, of course!: NationalGeographic.com and Expedia’s Viewfinder.

5 things you bring on a plane: My headphones, my laptop, gossip magazines, hand lotion, a scarf, and my pile of research paperwork for writing assignments.

What do you always seem to forget? A pen.

What do you want your loved one to buy you from an airport duty free store? Chocolate and whiskey.

Favorite travel iPhone app(s): Instagram because I absolutely love sharing my photos and GlobalConvert, for monetary exchange values across the world. I also love the organizational assistance from TripIt.

Most embarrassing travel moment: I can’t think of any. I am rarely embarrassed and easily laugh at myself.

Worst travel moment: In Rome, after I left my wallet on the cruise ship and was roaming the city with no money. Ask my teen, however, and he will tell you it was one of his absolute favorite travel moments and place to visit.

What’s your dream destination: New Zealand. I have daydreams about it all the time.

Favorite travel charity: The Passport Party Project, by Tracey Friley, is one of my absolute favorite travel charities. It works to provide underserved girls nationwide with their very first passport, and it also has been able to take some of those girls on their very first international trips, planting the seed of love for travel where there was little chance to do so before.

Best travel tip: Talk and befriend the locals, respect their languages, customs, and practices. Honor the privilege of being a guest in their home.

Interesting young woman. I enjoyed reading her story. How does someone get chosen for these bios? Must you be affiliated with a company? I write about travel for TRIP ADVISER.
