Travel App of the Week: Duolingo

DuolingoMy friend Jen Leo turned me on to this site when she wrote about it in the Los Angeles Times last week. Duolingo offers free language learning via classes/games/exercises, and already, more than 20 million subscribers are onboard. They have courses in French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish and instruction includes a combination of reading, verbal, audio and writing comprehension.

How’s it free? Here’s how it works: Somebody who needs a webpage translated uploads it to Duolingo. That document then gets presented to Duolingo students (users) who can translate it in order to practice the language they are learning. When the document is fully translated, Duolingo returns it to the original content owner who, depending on the type of document they uploaded, pays for the translation.
