Elevator ducksConsider the Elevators
Noise in hotels is a given. No hotel is going to be as quiet as your own home, especially when you’re trying to sleep at night. But while you can’t just demand that everyone shut the heck up and go to sleep, you can take specific  measures to make things as quiet as possible for yourself.

One of my strategies for minimizing hotel noise is to request a room that’s away from the elevators. This way, you’re less likely to be awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of the elevator coming and going—and more importantly, by the guests getting on and off.

FYI: Not all elevators will carry quacking ducks. This photo was taken at the 2013 Peabody Duck March, when I was named an Honorary Duckmaster.

We always ask for a room away from the elevators after staying in a hotel during a conventions. We were near the elevator and were constantly awakened by drunken people getting on and off the elevators! lol I can laugh about it now. #Travelskills

I think for women traveling alone, the safest room is near the elevator. Walking alone down a long hallway is very scary.

      Agreed!!

I have standing info on my reservations forms not to be near the elevator and not to be near the ice machine or vending room. The vending room can often cause more noise than the elevator. Some hotels have laundry facilities on alternate floors, also something to avoid. I also ask for a high floor to avoid parking lot noises.

Good one! I will add that to my list. Thank you

    Good point.
I stay far away from elevators, Ice machines and stay on the top floor in case some one noisy uses the stairwell late at night. It reduces the population of someone coming and going..

Many times the ice machine is more of a noise issue…who seems to need ice at 5:30 am? Afraid to open the door and look! But the “bing” of the elevator can keep one awake too….
Check in early and get the room at the end of the hall…..

I prefer to be near the elevators to minimize the walking. If I’m staying a hotel for more than a couple of nights and the noise is a problem, I’ll ask to be moved. The only place I absolutely must be near the elevators is in Las Vegas because the hotels are huge and I don’t care to walk the extra five minutes from the elevator to room 200,999!
