ChineseDon’t Be Intimidated by Language Barriers
Don’t let language barriers deter you from traveling; these days, most locals around the world, especially the younger generations and those in the hospitality industry, speak English. It depends where you’re going, and you should do your research, but it’s important to remember that we’re living in an age more connected and tourist-friendly (for better and for worse) than any before it.

Still, to be prepared, you can always download translator apps like this one and maps like this one to your smartphone to quell your fears—and just in case. Of course, knowing the local language does help, so if you’ve got the time, spend some time with Duolingo before you go!

Just got back from Lima, Peru and I did study with Duolingo before I left for the trip. I have not had Spanish since high school so I needed to refresh a bit. I did find that most of the people do speak English so it wasn’t a problem. Also, Thank you Johnny for the tip about the $298 fare via Avianca to Lima. It was a great flight with Avianca and I’m hoping to make another trip in August to Chile. Hope there will be some cheap flights then! I told everyone about your great website too!

Today, many people do not feel things have to be correct, or even near correct. I would not put much faith in someone who is trying to learn a language to translate something. It would be like playing the game of whispering a phrase in someone’s ear, they whisper it to the person next to them. Then the last person speaks the phrase and the first person tells what they really said.
