These days most airlines have entertainment systems that they offer for free, but there’s a catch: If you don’t have your own set of headphones or earbuds, they’ll charge you $2-$4 for a cheap pair. So bring ear buds or headphones when you fly so you don’t have to shell out the extra cash (actually, credit, since most airlines don’t accept cash in the air).

If you’re looking for a new set, the ear buds in the image above—Bose QuietComfort 20i Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones—are a great option.

I also bought an inexpensive 3.5MM socket to 2X 3.5mm jacks plug. Great for those airlines that have the two sockets for stereo. At least I can plug my own ear phones in and listen to the whole soundtrack that way, not just pick which half of the stereo feed you want
