Travel Tip of the Day: Dress Appropriately

VaticanDress Appropriately
As mentioned in Friday’s tip, my friend Lavanya Sunkara wrote an excellent post entitled “Ten Smart Tips for Solo Women.” One of her tips is to dress appropriately on the road and I couldn’t agree more. It’s best to dress conservatively and inconspicuously, especially in non-Western societies. In order to avoid offending local customs, make sure to pack long pants and long-sleeved shirts, and dresses that fall below the knee. The last thing you want is dirty looks, or worse, from locals to spoil the mood on your vacation.

FYI: I found the sign in the photo above at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

The last thing you want is dirty looks, or worse, from locals to spoil the mood on your vacation.” All week in Firenze where my wife and I are on holiday from New York City, the young American women (back-packers & college students), are oblivious to the frowning and dirty looks they are getting from locals. As my wife and I spot passels of women dressed in short ragged cut-off blue jeans at their thighs and low cut blouses, they look like they are dressed for the beach.
