USPSMore Mail Help
In response to Friday’s tip—having your neighbor get your mail—a number of readers shared some great advice—which I happen to follow myself. As they noted, another approach to managing your mail while you’re away is to have the post office hold your mail. You can request a mail hold online here.

Once you return home, you have the option of either having a USPS rep deliver your accumulated mail or picking it up at the post office. USPS will hold your mail for up to 30 days. I use it all the time, as it’s very convenient—and free!

You can stop most newspapers online as well, so be sure to look into that before you go.

It would be nice if the USPS were consistently on top of this – BUT, that isn’t the case. Even local drivers will tell you that the functionality is not real great.
Better to have a good neighbor do it – but there is the obvious privacy issue to deal with.

Even better, get your mail delivered to a UPS store or another place that accepts your mail. You never have to worry about putting a hold on mail or worry about packages being delivered while you are away.

I use the USPS app on my iPhone for my mail holds. It stores my info so I don’t have to enter it every time and keeps a log of holds that I have so I can make changes should the need arise.

We have a PO Box and can have our mail held for up to 30 days. We also have a mail slot in our garage door so we can use that as well and not have mail pile up, but it’s there when we return.

If you live in an apartment or condo, you may not need to have your mail held for the entire time you’re away. If you ask to have no fliers in your box, there may be enough room for two weeks of mail. If this would be right for you, have the PO only hold mail for the first weeks. For a month’s holiday, you will pay half the price for the PO holding your mail. You also might want to put a stop on catalogues and other such mail that fills up your box.
