Travel Tip of the Day: Know Your Holidays

Memorial DayKnow Your Holidays
Happy Memorial Day! My thanks go out today to all the brave men and women who keep our country safe, and to all those who’ve ever been a part of our military. As I noted on Veteran’s Day, upgrading a soldier is a great way to show your appreciation.

But just imagine for a second that you’re not American, and are visiting the U.S. today. Not just any visit, right? It’s important to do your research on local holidays and celebrations in the place you’re traveling to before you go—for many reasons. Businesses and sites could be closed, as on Memorial Day here. Prices could be higher, or hotels hard to come by, if a particular day is important.

RELATED: In honor of our soldiers this Memorial Day, I thought I would share this emotional tribute that I witnessed a couple months back.

I found out the hard way. I was delayed a day on a recent trip to Germany and arrived on May 1 – which is a holiday. Rental car places were closed and I ended up having to stay in the arrival city for an extra day. Then I did not know that May 8 is also a holiday in France – cerebrating the end of WWII. Hard to find any restaurants open in the countryside. Big cities are OK but small towns were not.
