Reader tips graphic 7Pay Phone Payment
Each Friday, we’re featuring a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from Barbara D. of Seattle, WA, who says:

“Never use a credit or debit card at a pay phone! Recently I forgot my cell phone and needed to make a call. I had no coins with me and decided to use my debit card. I assumed there would be an additional charge above the $1.00 for 3 minutes (you know what they say about assuming!). Never did I think it would be so exorbitant. I was charged $17.35 for a local call that lasted less than 30 seconds.”

Barbara’s right: You should always know the charges you’re in for when traveling, when using a pay phone or doing anything else—and if you don’t, you may end up paying for it. Thanks Barbara—and sorry to hear about the charge!
