Reader Travel Tip of the Day: Two Legs, One Flight Number

reader-travel-tip2Two Legs, One Flight Number
Each Friday, we’re featuring a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Paul B. of Los Gatos, CA, who says:

“Last week returning from London (LHR) to San Jose (SJC) via Chicago (ORD), we were booked on Flight #47—the same number on the flight to Chicago and on the connection to San Jose. When we called the Executive Platinum desk to check on our upgrade to business class, we were told by three separate people that we couldn’t be confirmed because there was no seat availability. Finally, the fourth person we spoked to mentioned that there were plenty of business class seats on the LHR-to-ORD leg, but because ORD to SJC was fully booked, there could be no upgrade. Finally we worked things out by essentially re-booking. So, at least on American, realize that, if the flight number is the same on all legs, this situation will occur.”

In a follow-up, Paul also mentioned that the same thing happened to a friend of his flying Delta from China to Atlanta through Detroit: no upgrade was available because only one of the two legs was full. Sometimes airline procedure is complicated, but knowing tips like this one can make flying that much easier. Thanks Paul!
