Manhattan BeachStay Out of the Bike Paths
Yesterday’s tip was about watching out for bikers in cities like New York, since many ride on sidewalks, down the wrong way of one-way streets and through crowds. Well, when traveling to Europe, especially in bike-crazy cities like Amsterdam, make sure to stay out of the bike paths while walking. Europeans know that this lane is dedicated to bikers and they know not to walk in it and to look both ways before crossing it.

Unfortunately, many Americans aren’t accustomed to this, and so don’t know any better. I learned the hard way years ago when a biker flying by almost clipped me and then—rightfully—yelled at me.

FYI: Of course, there are bike paths in the US, too—like the one above in my home, Manhattan Beach—so be mindful whenever you’re in a new place!
