JetGetting Your Gate-Checked Bag on a Regional Jet
I don’t know anyone who likes flying on regional jets. Not only are they small and cramped, but their overhead bins are also ridiculously small with most airlines. For this reason, most passengers have to gate-check their bags. And that’s not so bad—until it’s time to retrieve them, because many passengers don’t know the drill and don’t follow the flight attendants’ instructions.

If you gate-check a bag, when you get off of the plane, line up in the designated row as instructed. Don’t create a second line, because it blocks the people who didn’t gate-check a bag from getting through the jetway and just causes more chaos and confusion. Usually, the further back you sit on the plane, the further back you should be in the line to get your bag. It might take a few more minutes, but just be patient—and don’t create your own line.

You should also ask when gate checking if you will actually receive your bag plane side when you land, or will it go to baggage claim at your final destination. And flyer beware, sometimes, even when they tell you that you will get it back plane side they could end up sending it through to baggage claim anyway. Make sure to get your critical items out of any bag you don’t take on a plane with you. :)

I LOVE this tip! Only problem is the people who need it probably won’t see it. (BTW, I like regional jets. It seems that people are more civilized in the smaller configuration–maybe that’s because there’s not an exuberant proliferation of carry on items?).

The Barbie Jet (AKA a Toy Jet) usually a CRJ or ERJ when you book a flight, the RJ85 is slightly better but do not even consider anything bigger than a laptop bag as carry on, the glove box in my truck is bigger than the overhead bin.

Honestly, I don’t mind flying regional, mind you my main airport just has Dash 8-300 aircraft (best regional turboprop around IMHP).
Air Canada Express (Jazz Avaition) always does a really good job here in Canada. Gate check is always simple and simple!

Even better idea, when you gate check your bag, hang back and relax in your seat until the pushers and shovers have deplaned. Then exit the aircraft calmly to find your bag with no line.

      Agreed!
