Wash Your Hands!
I’ve talked about the importance of washing your hands in an airplane bathroom, but I’ve never advised you flat-out to make sure you always keep your hands clean when you travel (and at home). I was reminded why the other day while traveling—I can’t remember where—by a bathroom sign (above), which has some great tips on it (like how you should use warm water and rub for 20 seconds).

Again, it seems like common sense but you’d be shocked to learn how many men I see walk out of airplane restrooms (including stalls) and not wash their hands! It’s disgusting and one reason why I prefer to fist-bumping people to shaking hands.

I used to work as a hostess in a restaurant and I finally convinced out manager to get rid og the free, unwrapped mints for obvious reasons. I also hate to use straws, stir sticks and cutlery from any easily-accessible location. A small case with eating utensils has become part of my daily “baggage”.

This is also why I carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer with me. I buy the small bottles from the 99 Cent Store or the Dollar Tree Store. I refill the little bottle from a larger bottle. I buy the large bottle from the 99 Cent Store or Dollar Tree. The little bottles can easily slip into a pocket, purse, backpack. I can clean my hands and I don’t need soap or water.

I clean my hands after I order my meal in a restaurant. Studies show the menu is extremely dirty. Menus are not wiped down or sanitized. The dirtiest things in a restaurant are not the bathrooms. The dirtiest things in a restaurant are: salt and pepper shakers, ketchup bottles, steak sauce bottles and menus. I order my meal, return the menu and then clean my hands before I eat.

If someone had a cold, flu, pneumonia, bronchitis, strep throat, etc. and touched the menu, salt, pepper, ketchup, steak sauce bottles and I come behind them? I will get sick also. I keep my hands clean to prevent illnesses. Hand sanitizer is the ticket.

Thanks for this tip Johnnyjet, I will try fist-bumping, or not touching at all. Most ladies I see DO wash their hands. If guys aren’t, then we don’t want to trade germs at all. We are geekfreaks and wipe down the tray tables and armrests with “travel wipes” too. We have never become ill, not yet anyways. I always read “travel hints and tips, hacks” always can learn a new trick!!! Have a good mid-week!

After washing your hands in a public restroom, use the disposable paper towel that you used to dry your hands to turn off the water faucet and also to open the restroom door so you don’t pick up the germs from those people who did not wash their hands. Throw the paper towel in a trash can as you leave the restroom. If there is none nearby, throw your paper towel behind the door. Don’t worry, the janitors will get the message and they will put a trash can near the restroom door if they are that smart.

I have been told that the way to make sure you’re washing your hands for long enough is to sing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” as you wash them. Apparently that’s how they teach kids to wash their hands for 20 seconds in pre-schools!
