Don’t Wear a Branded Camera StrapDon’t Wear a Branded Camera Strap
I picked up today’s tip listening to Leo Laporte’s The Tech Guy show, where I’m a weekly guest every Saturday at 12:30 pm PT. While waiting for my segment, I heard Leo talking about how he doesn’t wear the branded camera strap that comes with the camera—especially if it’s an expensive camera—as it just advertises to everyone what model you’re carrying. Instead, get a generic one that doesn’t have any branding or put black tape over the lettering on the strap.

FYI: The photo above is from an African safari!

I use an OLD green print camera strap from my 1st film camera. I get tons of compliments on it and I always have to chuckle because it’s about 30 years old. It still even has the elastic to store film canisters on it. The branded ones are getting you to advertise for them for free, along with your point.

I’m afraid I don’t get this one. What difference does it make what brand is on your camera strap when the bad guy can just look right at the camera on the end of the strap?

Some people’s camera’s don’t look that expensive and I also tend to keep my camera hidden in my jacket

It’s best to put a small gaffers tape across the brand of the camera. It takes away the attention from people who are looking. I try to put some blue painters tape on the side of the camera – SLR- so that it looks ugly and beat up. My camera strap has a thin metal cable that is imbedded in the strap. That’s what I do when I travel.

hmm this tip is so so… in my opinion.

I am a photographyer myself and have a good camera. Sometimes I wonder what other people use and it’s easier to find the model by looking at the camera as on the strap.
Heck sometimes it would be worth stealing a cheap camera if you see what lense is attached to it. This tip might only help for wannabe-thiefs. If you are professional and know what you are going for, this wont stop you. You alone can determine the model by sizes and looking at them, even without seeing any brand or model name on the camera. This works for the major brands…
I exchanged my camera strap not because of that, I got a better one with a better shoulder pouch for more comfort. Most standard straps are “cheap”…
