Allianz Travel Insurance recently unveiled its sixth annual Vacation Confidence Index, which revealed a good deal of insight into the world of the American traveler. One finding of note, and concern: 135 million Americans—a full 56%—haven’t taken a vacation in the past 12 months! The survey defines a vacation as “a trip of at least a week to a place that is more than 100 miles from home.”

More than half of us don’t vacation? This can’t be. Why can’t Americans take a little time off for their health and wellbeing? I understand work hours can be long and taxing, and the need or desire to focus on raising a family, etc., but if we don’t take care of ourselves a bit we can’t raise our families or work to our full capacity.

Allianz says the number of Americans not vacationing is an increase of almost 10 million (52%) from the number in 2014 who said they didn’t take a vacation over the 12 months prior. The survey also notes that 15% of Americans haven’t taken a vacation for 7-12 months. Another 10% say they haven’t vacationed in 4-6 months—which seems at least a little more reasonable.

“With more Americans waiting longer between vacations, it’s even more important that their travel investment is protected,” said Mike Nelson, CEO at Allianz Global Assistance USA. “The last thing travelers want is an unforeseen circumstance ruining the vacation they’ve been waiting over a year to take. The right travel insurance policy will give peace of mind from those unanticipated travel delays, lost luggage, sickness and medical emergencies.”

To the non-vacationing Americans: Why weren’t you able to take a vacation last year? We want to hear from you!

That stat is literally insane to me!! Why is America the no vacation nation?? It’s crazy. it’s definitely one of the reasons why I’ve loved european culture, because they live life. it’s not “live to work” mentality. thanks for the insight!
