The Best Airline Bargains
The Wall Street Journal recently published a piece on airfare bargains, which exist in as many different forms as there are airlines. There are many ways to find deals—my deals newsletterThe Flight Deal, price-fare alerts—but especially if you’re open to letting the deal choose your destination (see Germanwings), it’s a good idea to know what the airlines are offering as best practices. The best fares, of course, are not always what you find with a standard search on an airline’s website. For example:

  • Alaska Airlines — Runs “Fast Dash’’ sales at 11 am PT every Wednesday and tips customers off to destinations offered from its Twitter handle
  • American Airlines — Has a configurable email newsletter with, among other things, last-minute deals on flights that weekend and other deals/sales
  • Azul — Brazilian airline (founded by jetBlue founder) now offering 10-day ($299) and 21-day ($399) all-you-can-fly passes
  • Germanwings — Offers a “Blind Booking” feature that lets you book flights for incredible rates with one catch: You can choose only where you fly into and out of (in Germany) and not where you fly (you can narrow down destinations by category like “Culture”)
  • jetBlue — Tweets expiring and limited-time deals from a deal Twitter handle (@JetBlueCheeps)
  • Southwest Airlines — Has a “Click ‘N Save” email newsletter that alerts subscribers to deals first, and sometimes with exclusive promo codes
