reader-travel-tip2Hit the Cleaners Before Packing
Each Friday, we’re featuring a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Judi L. from Lake Forest, IL, who says:

“If you hate to pack as much as I do, give yourself enough time to take the clothes you plan to bring to the cleaners and ask them to fold rather than
hang your items on hangers. The tissue paper and plastic bags will keep your clothes from wrinkling and most everything will be ready to slip right into your luggage.”

Another great packing tip—like this one and this one. Thanks, Judi!

Agreed, good one. Also, if you have a suitcase that has a hanger function, to save on weight, don’t pack the hangers. Insert the clothes as if they were on a hangar (or folded). Hangars could put you over the weight limit. Use hotel hangars and save time/frustration in baggage check area.

Great idea. Be aware though that most cleaners charge extra to fold clothes. I learned this when I asked to have my husbands shirts folded instead of on hangers. Pack all your clothes that wrinkle and place in dry cleaner bags. They will not get as wrinkled. Place long pants in the plastic bags and lay them in the suitcase folding at the “sit down line” Then any crease won’t be as noticeable. I leave dresses and blouses on the wire hangers in the plastic bags if possible and lay in suitcase folding in halves or thirds. They can be pulled out and hung up at your destination and will generally not even require touch up ironing and saves time unpacking. . I save dry cleaner bags for travel folding as not everything gets dry cleaned prior to travel. Just remember don’t store your clothes in the plastic bags at home long term.
