Short bioSherri Eisenberg has covered the cruise industry for almost 20 years, first as the Cruise Editor at Travel Holiday, then as the Cruise Editor of Travel + Leisure, Editorial Director for Cruiseline.com and a weekly cruise columnist for The Los Angeles Times. She has also written about cruising for numerous other magazines and newspapers, including Condé Nast Traveler, Budget Travel and The Boston Globe. Eisenberg is also the author of “Frommer’s Easy Guide to Cruising,” to be published by FrommerMedia later this year. Eisenberg has been quoted as an expert on cruising in a variety of top national outlets, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal’s MarketWatch. She has cruised on most of the world’s top cruise lines and sailed in the industry’s most popular regions. She won’t give you a simple answer if you ask her what her favorite ship is, but she will absolutely help you figure out which one is right for you.

In addition to cruising, Eisenberg is also passionate about food as a reflection of culture. She has written about crabs in Maryland, dim sum in Hong Kong and foie gras in Québec. She is the author of “The Food Lovers’ Guide to Brooklyn,” the book that helped anoint Brooklyn as the next hot restaurant scene and was covered in The New York Times and Time magazine.

Eisenberg lives in Manhattan. She has no plants or pets and keeps a bag packed at all times so that she can hop a flight—or a ship—at a moment’s notice.

How often do you fly? More often than most humans…not as much as Johnny Jet!

How many countries have you been to? 386 cities in 47 countries.

How many continents have you been to? 6

Earliest travel memory: My parents and I took a Home Lines cruise on the Oceanic to Bermuda in 1977. My mom was pregnant with my sister, and there was a storm that caused rough seas. A lot of passengers got seasick. According to family lore, there was one night where I was only person happily eating my lobster in the dining room. There’s a cute picture of me somewhere as a tot wearing the captain’s hat.

Favorite American city: New York City.

Favorite international city: Paris.

Least favorite country: Malta.

I have no desire to go to: On a trans-Pacific ocean crossing. I fear the seasickness potential!

Country with the meanest immigration officers: Scotland! I had a horrible experience there a couple months ago. Clearly, I am an enormous threat to that country’s security, or the immigration officer’s behavior was inappropriately rude. She called the friend that was picking me up to confirm I was staying with him and said, “We have Ms. Eisenberg here, and she is huffing and puffing.” Well, you would huff and puff, too, with that warm “welcome.”

Favorite World Heritage Site: Mont St. Michel in France.

Aisle or window: Window.

Favorite airport lounge: Virgin at Heathrow.

Favorite U.S. airport: I fly out of LGA as often as possible, not because it is fabulous but because it is 15 minutes from my apartment without traffic.

Favorite international airport: Singapore Changi.

Favorite hotel: Esperanza in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Favorite island: Bora Bora.

Favorite beach: Cow Wreck Beach, Anegada.

Favorite fancy restaurant: Joel Robuchon in Las Vegas.

Favorite hole-in-the-wall: Tone Café on Neptune Avenue in Brooklyn makes amazingly fluffy Georgian-style bread that oozes melting cheese.

Favorite bar: Dear Irving in New York.

Favorite food: Dim sum.

Least favorite food: Beets.

Favorite travel book(s): “Heat” by Bill Buford, which traces Mario Batali’s inspirational tour of Italy.

Favorite travel website(s)—besides JohnnyJet.com, of course! ShermansCruise, of course!

5 things you bring on a plane: Headphones, an iPad stocked with movies, a splitter if I am traveling with a friend, a Mophie to keep my tech toys juiced, and dinner.

I’m embarrassed but I haven’t been to: India! How is that possible? One of my best friends from childhood is Punjabi and I have always wanted to go with him.

Worst travel moment: Discovering my passport had not been renewed properly…at JFK on the way to Hong Kong.

She works for a cruise organization, and fears sea sickness? I would hope that she would find something that works for her (I thank Poseidon when I discovered crystallized ginger)

Also you have fly questions, how about cruise questions for experienced people like her?
