A silky sharkHow to Avoid Being Attacked by a Shark
Did you know 2015 had a record number of shark attacks? 98 in total, which was up by 26 from the previous year’s tally. The most took place in the US with 59. Florida had 30 of those, followed by North Carolina (eight) and South Carolina (eight). Hawaii had seven and California and Texas each had two while New York and Mississippi each had one. Fortunately, only six out of the 98 people died and just one of those took place in the US.

So what you can do to prevent from being attacked by a shark? For starters, attacks are of course still extremely rare. In addition, according to this CNN article:

  • Don’t swim at dawn, dusk or night
  • Don’t swim where people are fishing, or where fish are schooling or where seabirds are feeding
  • Don’t wear shiny jewelry
  • If attacked hit the shark in its nose and claw at its eyes and gills

Stay out of the water springs to mind….

Being a scuba diver, I love snorkeling at dusk or in the dark (of course, with a light). Best time to see new critters. But, always on the look out for what is off to the side….
