reader-travel-tip2Instead of Shaving Cream…
Each Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Paul B., who says:

“During a recent trip abroad, I realized that I had forgotten to replace my spent can of shaving cream. My wife suggested that I use hair conditioner to shave and, to my pleasant surprise, it worked very well. Better, in fact, that some of the aerosol products I’ve used in the past. Since virtually all hotels have shampoo and conditioner, I no longer pack a bulky aerosol can in my toiletries bag.”

That’s an interesting one—and something I’ll have to try out myself. Thanks, Paul!

Yep…I’ve tried it too and it works splendidly.

About the shaving cream issue: dump the whole idea of soap and switch to shaving oil. Amazon and other have a selection. A small eye-drop sized container will last for months and months. You only need 3-5 drops for a shave and you don’t need to rinse it off. I’ve been traveling in South America for more than a year and have just about finished my 2nd vial.

Hair conditioner traditionally has a non-masculine scent that will stay with you throughout the day. You can try a product called shaving butter that is non aerosol (tube) that can work better than shaving cream.

Try Shave Oil–it’s phenomenal and comes in a tiny plastic bottle. I use it at home as well as travel and will never go back to regular shave cream.

Hair conditioner can sometimes irritate the skin when used to shave. I bring a solid shampoo (I love the ones made by Lush) that gives me a nice, soapy lather and it’s a moisturizing formula. Lush makes lots of solid toiletries, so I have hardly any liquids to get checked at the TSA checkpoints.
