Now here's the ultimate tip for not waiting at the Coliseum: The entrance fee also includes entry to the nearby Palatine hill (Palatino), and vice versa. Catch my drift? Look: no line! So go to Palatine Hill first, and don't throw away your ticket! If that's still too much for you, you can always buy tickets in advance (for a fee) online at Pierreci.it.

The emperors of Rome built their palaces on the Palatine. The ruins of the palaces of Caesar Augustus, Tiberius and Diocletianus are still visible. Palatine hill is a great place to stroll around -- there is plenty of open space, it's quiet, and it's set among the ancient ruins. For more info, check out

All over Rome there are plenty of places to drink, or fill up water bottles from taps. The city is fortunate to have a rich water source and aqueduct system, much of which has been unchanged since the Roman Empire. But if you see a sign saying "non potabile," don't drink the water! |

Via Veneto is the richest street in Rome. Plenty of restaurants have outdoor and indoor sidewalk cafes. How many times have you seen a sidewalk cafe that is indoors? |
