What in the world is wrong with the AA reservations site. It is constantly out of commission and saying technical difficulties. Are they trying to force customers away or what?

  2. You have excellent information and a user friendly site; thanks.

  3. Hi Johnny,
What is the best way to find air fare for a trip that flies from our home town of Portland, OR [PDX] to visit relatives in Sapporo, Japan and comes back with a 5 day stop in Honolulu?
I tried to use your booking tool but this is not a simple round trip deal and I was unsure of how to proceed.

  4. Hello Johnny,
I just got laid off from work (it’s a good thing!) and want to take a few month off to travel. I want to explore Adriatic cost starting at the heel of Italy and going around the coast to Greece or Turkey. But because of the hot weather and huge crowds, i thought i would go elsewhere first and in the fall start my Adriatic trip. I like places that are off the beaten path and do not like to just vegetate on a beach. Do you have any suggestions of best places to go in the summer and any other relevant advise?

    Thank you in advance.

  5. I heard you today 6/13/15 on the radio and you had mentioned at the end of the show that airfare to Bangkok on China Air is now $599. Can you PLEASE let me know where I can find info on that price as we are planning to go to Thailand soon. Many Thanks!

  6. Hi Johnny Jet!

My name is Julie and I work for the tech startup company that created the Foli App. This app lets you access eBooks and magazines at hotels and airports. The main goal is to make traveling more environmentally friendly by having hotels and airports use less paper.

I am a personal fan of your blog and I was wondering if you would like to try out the service for free on your next trip. If so, please let me know so I can set up the service for you!

Looking forward to speaking with you,

      • Hi JJ,

I recently received an email with the below content. I am signed up for Global Entry so I can see that I would be eligible to receive this offer but am leery of scams. Have you heard of this program? Thanks. Peter

“You are receiving this message because you have been identified by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as a U.S. citizen or Canadian citizen enrolled in the GE/ NEXUS program. CBP would like to inform you that the United Kingdom now operates an expedited entry program called Registered Traveller and you may be eligible to apply.

Registered Traveller was launched by the UK Border Force to give faster and more convenient entry to the UK for eligible nationals from the United States and Canada. Membership of Registered Traveller costs £70 in the first year and £50 per year thereafter.

Membership of Registered Traveller includes the following benefits:
        üAccess to ePassport gates
üUse of the UK / EEA queue
üNo requirement to complete a landing card on arrival in the UK
üNo routine credibility interview with a Border Force officer.

Visitor eligibility criteria have changed and you now may apply to join if you have made at least 4 journeys to the United Kingdom in the previous two years. Complete details of Registered Traveller eligibility and availability can be found online at

Registered Traveller is proving extremely popular with members and to date there have been over 275,000 crossings of the border by members with extremely positive feedback such as,

Hi Jhonny, Love listening to you on Leo Laporte’s Computer guy show. Do you know if there is a search engine to view special flight deals from a specific airport. I usually fly from Newark, NJ. Thanks.

  10. I have shared the last two flights with young girls all sitting together and laughing and screeching throughout the whole flight as if they were the only persons on the flight. They never shut up and were so loud that I couldn’t understand why the flight attendant couldn’t ask them to hold it down. What do you suggest should this (please, no) happen again?

    • Good question! I’m not sure if there’s anything you can do but ask them to lower their voices or ask the FA

  11. Hi Johnny…..I listen to you every week on Leo’s show. You have GREAT info! Thank you….
What booking site do you recommend to find a good deal on a B & B in Napa Valley wine AREA…..not just Napa itself. Is Trivago good? Or is it best to call the B & B itself for best price. They are very expensive in September.
    Look forward to your answer.

JJ/ Great site! I love the ‘Travel Style’ section, BUT found it allot easier to navigate before (a year ago) than now? Not exactly sure what you changed on it. Would like to see Anthony Bourdain, and Calvin Cowie,on ‘Travel Style’!

  13. Hi Johnny! I just came across your write-up about Manhattan Beach. We have a 7-hour layover in LAX on Saturday (Aug 15th) and was wondering if you would recommend going to Manhattan Beach for a few hours with 2 kids (they are 7 and 2 and both are girls). And if you are, is there any particular activities that we can do with them beside strolling on the beach and eating out? Really appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks so much!

    • I definitely would go. You can stroll along the beach or go for a swim. There’s showers by the pier. Have lunch at PitFire (kids love it)

  14. Hi from London, Johnny,

Love listening to you on The Tech Guy. Always so fun and informative.

Do you happen to know if we can expect international fares from the US (round trip LAX – London in early October) to drop after Labour day? Do they usually?

  15. Hi Johnny,

LOVE your website! I wish I had found you years ago.

I am considering becoming a home based travel agent. I am currently burnt out on a long career in the mental health field so I have the people skills and do now own my own business.

Do you have tips for a later in life travel agent wanna be? I have done a lot of research thus far and it is quite confusing. Tips on where to start? Best place to go for education??

    Thanks for your help! Kim

  17. Hello,

I just read your article/review on Korean Airlines A380 business class.

I am just wondering….with regards to seating…..if someone in seat B, sound asleep and their seat is fully laid out, will the person in seat A be able to get up and use the bathroom?

Or will the person in seat A (window) have a hard time getting up, thus will have to wake up the person in seat B (aisle).

Thank you, and I really enjoy reading your articles. Hope to hear from you soon.

  18. I was going to book a hotel room in Boston using Kayak and got a great price but it was on site I never heard of “Amoma”. Can you tell me if this is a a legit website?

Listen to you on the Tech Guy every week.

  19. Dear Johnny,

I have been a subscriber for some time and enjoy each e-mail I receive. Our family just lost our dear mother to cancer. as we had our father. Reading your family’s beautiful tributes to your mom, and seeing how you almost always include your dad in your travels, I have to tell you how much respect and admiration I have for you. No matter how hard we tried, we could never repay our parents for the wonderful lives they provided for us kids. Learning the joy of travel from them was one of the greatest gifts they gave to us and our offspring – many fond memories and thankfully photos. Thank you for your inspiration.

    ~ Dan

    • Thank you very much for the kind comment. I’m really sorry to hear about your mom. We are both very lucky to have amazing parents.

  20. Hi Johnny!

I absolutely love your segment on the Techguy! You do a great job, buddy.

Question: Which is the most rugged and durable carry-on suitcase in the world? I’m a lawyer and don’t have time to be slowed down by luggage mishaps like a handle ripping, a zipper breaking, or the contents of the suitcase smashing. I simply need very rugged and very durable, and I’m willing to cry about the high price at the time of checkout.

  21. Johnny, I just read the article about the 10 bad plane passengers and you asked that if anyone had a comment or anything to contact you. I’m taking you up on that.
I don’t fly that often, but one thing that bugs me is when you have a carry-on bag and want to put it in the overhead bin and find that someone else has hogged the whole bin so that there is no room for anyone else to put their carry-on in the bin or if you want to put it under your seat and find that someone behind you has taken it as has the one in front of you did . Any suggestions about what can be done about that?
The main reason that I’m asking is that I plan to fly to New Orleans and will have my backpack with me and I plan to have things in it that I don’t want to be in my rolling suitcase as they will be my meds, laptop, jewelry, purse and money/credit card(s), so I need to keep that bag with me.
Thanks for any suggestions/tips you may have on the subject.
    B.L. Miller

    • Hi B.L.

The best thing to do is to get on the plane early. You can either pay for priority seating (depending on the airline) or ask the gate agent if you can board early.

  22. Thank you.

  23. What are the specifics about accruing miles by buying coins from the U.S. Mint?

  24. Hi Johnny,
I live in Manhattan Beach and would like a recommendation for a good travel agent.
Listen and love your segment on Leo’s podcast.

  25. Enjoyed your contribution from Paris to Leo’s show just now. Curious about ParisPerfect though. Don’t understand why the organisation is based in Bermuda? Any clue and wouldn’t it be better to find a local company?

  26. Hey Johnny,

Having a hard time finding the answer to this travel/airline question..Thanks for any help..
My husband is flying to Argentina with Aerolineas Argentina, to climb in Patagonia for 5 weeks. He has 2 huge “Mule Bags” with his gear, tents,…what please are the weight limits on International Flights for both carry on AND below the cabin? He will most likely have to pay extra, but need some guidelines..Is trying to keep them around 50lbs, but heard that they can be 70lbs. on International flight ? Thanks !…been on “hold” for way too long! Best! Cal

  27. Dear Johnny….We do travel several miles Via Air and SUV…
my question to you is…I have heard of a World Passport? We both have USA Passports living in Alaska it’s a must traveling across Canada, and other places. Is there such a thing as a World Passport and is there an Advantage to having one??
    Thank you,

    • I have not heard of it so I will have to look into it. You could get a passport card for driving between the U.S. and Canada or better yet, NEXUS

  28. Johnny
I heard you on Leo show talking about Virgin Air 2 for 1 to Hawaii. Cannot find ?? Bob

  29. Johnny: I’m taking my wife and our two teenage children to PEK on the AA 787 Business class. The meal options don’t look great; do you recommend any of the special meals for AA Int’l business?

  30. Which airline is best to book a group traveling from California to seattle

  31. My wife and I are planning our first travel out of the U.S. (England/Scotland) next April. Would you suggest that we use the services of a travel agent or attempt to book the trip ourselves?

  33. So I read today about Johnny’s bad experience on Air Canada Rouge.
Glad to hear that I am not the only one. Anyway, there is a new anti-Rouge petition here that Johnny and everyone who reads this should sign:

Thank You for all the great advice you give on the Leo Laporte show every week.
You recently called in on a satellite phone from a boat, the quality was amazing. What service do you use? which phone do you like? Do you rent or buy? We cruise occasionally but must be able to call in to the business. We have tried sat phones before but the person on the other end said the calls were slurred and hard to hear. With your help and advice we look forward to cruising more often.

    Thank You,
    Royal Nelson

    • Hi Royal, I was using the ship’s phone so not sure on the make. You can rent or buy one from and if you mention my name you should get a discount.

You mentioned in a recent tip that you have a good travel agent who can help with international upgraded air. Can you please share the name of your agent?

  36. Hey Johnny,

I an a single traveler and was wondering if you have any comments for me as far as booking a trip (cruise) to Alaska.
As you well know we are often charged quite a bit more just by traveling alone.
    Any suggestions on your part?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Warm regards

  37. Hi Johnny,
I have a question about getting free TSA PreCheck with Global Entry, NEXUS, Sentri, etc. My passport expires in August, 2017. Should I wait until after I get my passport renewed next year or will TSA PreCheck with Global Entry carry over onto my new passport?

    • That’s a good question! I assume it would carry over but I would double check. I’m running around crazy at the moment otherwise I would so please let me know.

  38. I hold dual citizenship (US and Italy) and have passports of both. I was born in US and reside in the US. Can you speak here or on your TechGuy spot as to the best and proper way to use both passports for travel to Europe. Which do I use for airfare purchase or TSA security? Which to I use upon landing in Europe? Will either help avoid customs or immigration lines? Which to use for return trip? Do I have to buy 2 one way fares or does round trip fare work as well?

    Thank you.

    • Hi! I’m not sure about dual passports. You need the U.S. one for TSA Pre and Global Entry. I would check both one-ways and R/T prices. Buy one way if you don’t know your return date.

Johnny I listen to you on Leo’s show and wanted to ask about trip planning software similar to Microsoft’s old streets and trips. Streets and trips allowed you to break a trip up into segments, day 1, day 2 etc. Google and Apples trip planers go point a to b with no segmentation. There are features in was okay and gave hotel information which is cool but again no segmentation. Although I only tried their website never the app. Have you got any recommendations?

  40. My sister & I are taking our mom to New York the first part of December to see the Christmas lights and shop of course! Do you have any suggestions on a great place to stay and reasonably priced and when we should book our hotel? Also, things to do or see that time of the year that most people don’t know about. Love your web site!
    Thank you

    • Hi Leisa

I just read about this new hotel and the rates are around $200. 313-room INNSIDE New York hotel (132 W. 27th Street between 6th & 7th Avenues).

Just heard you for first time on Leo Leporte show on Sunday. I must compliment you on your website which is very 1st Class. Over the past 20 years my wife and I have been touring the EU every two years and visiting one country for 3 months by driving our own or leased car. We use the “No Reservations” method and nothing is planned ahead. When we return from Greece in Sept 2017 we will have toured every inch of the EU except Bulgaria and Romania.
Over 10 years ago, a fellow from IBM convinced me to put my writing home “Diarios” and photos on a website. I used FrontPage and of course now that is old software even though it still works. The site is It is not finished and I am hoping I can before I pass. I would be interested in your comments. Do you think I should add advertising to it.

    • That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing. If you want to make money from it I would redesign the site. WordPress might be a good start. But advertising doesn’t bring in a lot of money unless you get a TON of traffic.

  42. Lost luggage. With the amount of travel you do I am sure that it has happened to you. I currently am having to deal with Sprit from O’Hare where the baggage was just dropped off with Frontier in terminal 3. How long does it usually take from them to find it and send it along? I am sure others can benefit from advise too.

  44. Hello Johnny, I have looked everywhere and cannot get an answer. I saw your post about the American Airlines 32b, and I am trying to choose the best seats since it is a long flight from Kona to LAX then to DFW. I am looking at the exit rows 11 and 12 and also 24 and 25 and was wondering is there a window with the “window seat,” or is it just an exit or a blank wall?

  45. Hi Johnny
Enjoy u on KFI . Sorry I left a reply in the comment section , anyway I’m looking for a watch dog fare site that u can enter a 1)specific airport , 2) destination AND a 3) very open departure date (. 30 days or more) is there such a thing ? Thanks Louise burns

  46. Johnny, I don’t travel a whole lot but about 5 times per year I take trips on airlines. Delta is my choice airline and I always purchase a First Class Ticket. Today I went to check in for a flight tomorrow to Detroit and find out that they bumped me out of first class and put me in Comfort+. I purchased the ticket in June for the August 26th flight but it seems that someone with more clout took the first class seat I chose. After calling Delta I was told that they may have given it up to a Medallion member who is disabled. Of course we both know they are just making things up. I agree they gave it to a Medallion Member or someone who paid more money. I finally did get $200 back in a voucher but that isn’t what I want. I want my First Class seat. What would you do? This isn’t the first time this has happened to me. Today I asked for a supervisor but again was told, tough luck we don’t have any other First Class Seats and we won’t bump someone else out of their seat. I have a couple of other trips on Delta in the next few months and just need to know what to do if it happens on them.

Please stop suggesting taking sleeping pills on flights. This can be dangerous as it can lead to DVT/ deep vein thrombosis. This can be very dangerous to your health. Please check with a doctor for the whole story on this.

  48. Johnny, I’m going to Vietnam for vacation in late October. The visa application requires that I send my passport to Vietnam’s US embassy in Washington D.C. I’m not sure how I feel about this. Is it something that I should be concened or nervous about? I’ve travelled to about a dozen different countries all of which either do not require visa’s for US citizens or the visa can be purchased at the airport upon arrival.
