DOING IT UP RIGHT IN DENVER

NIGHTCLUBS
If you want the best mojito in town, I recommend Mynt. The patrons are typically in their 20s and are usually well-behaved … usually. A fun bar if you're looking for a loud but wild evening. Mynt Mojito Lounge, 1424 Market St., Denver, CO 80202, (303) 825-6968

Tryst is a fun combination of a nightclub and a place simply to hang out. If the girls from Sex and the City ever came to Denver, this would be their place, I think. Tryst Lounge, 1512 Larimer St., Denver, CO 80202, (303) 629-0544

5 Degrees combines a cool bar up-front, a dance floor in a solid middle section and an outdoor patio in back. The patrons of 5 Degrees are young, hip and typically very attractive – which matches the decor of this place perfectly. 5 Degrees, 1475 Lawrence St., Denver, CO 80202, (303) 260-7505

Spill has a bit of a "meet-market" feel to it, but hell, you're in Denver to party, right? Although the bar is not much to look at from the outside, it is a heck of a good time on the inside. Spill, 1410 Market St., Denver, CO 80202, (303) 302-9965, (720) 932-0181.

D C 10 evokes days gone by when flight attendants were all called stewardesses and attractiveness was a key ingredient in getting the job. But enough about the staff! D C 10 is a hip nightclub that vaguely resembles the inside of a jet plane – in a good way. It is a cab ride away being just off downtown ($8), but is a lot of fun on a weekend night. D C 10 Lounge, 940 Lincoln St., Denver, CO 80203, (303) 813-1032

Monarck was made famous by Real World: Denver on MTV. This was a favorite bar of the cast and many of their adventures started or happened at Monarck. Monarck,1416 Market St., Denver, CO, (303) 888-0655, lotusentertainment.net

The 9th Door is an all-time favorite of mine for meeting and mingling with some of Denver's most attractive singles. Get there early and stake out a claim to one of the comfy sofas or arrange for bottle service and guarantee yourself a spot. 9th Door has fantastic food, largely tapas, as well as great drinks. 9th Door, 1808 Blake St., Denver, CO 80202, (303) 292-2229

GETTING OUTDOORS URBAN-STYLE
After a night of carousing in downtown, a little break is a glorious thing. Two of my favorite things to do are catching a baseball game at Coors Field or taking an urban mountain hike. Both of these activities take approximately four hours to complete from start to finish counting travel time.

COORS FIELD
Coors Field is home to the Colorado Rockies Major League Baseball team. The field is four blocks from the Jet Hotel and is located right in the heart of LoDo. In fact, many of the bars, nightclubs and restaurants mentioned above are within spitting distance of the ballpark. The cheapest tickets to the game are $4 for ‘Rockpile' seats, which are bleachers high in center field. These seats are not the most comfortable being the only ones that lack a backrest. For the best experience, I recommend purchasing tickets in sections 221-227 ($47-$75) or 321-327 ($15-$45). Not only will these seats not cost you an arm and a leg, but they offer the best view of the beautiful Rocky Mountains over the top of the stadium. Should the game be played at dusk, this is one of the most impressive sights in all of Major League Baseball. Remember to bring a pair of shades and some sun block as the sun sets over those same mountains. Coors Field and the Colorado Rockies Baseball team

URBAN MOUNTAIN HIKE
Denver is well known for its beautiful hiking trails. Most of them, however, require a full day's investment of time. What if you just have a few hours and want to enjoy some scenery outside of your car? My suggestion is Mt. Sanitas, which is about 45 minutes from downtown Denver and just minutes out of downtown Boulder. You can either drive to the trailhead or take an RTD bus to 4th and Maple in Boulder, which is just a few blocks from the trailhead. The bus ride from downtown Denver should take about 45 minutes.

The Mt. Sanitas hike is not a difficult one; it looks harder than it actually is. The rewards are some spectacular views of Boulder and the surrounding mountains. When you get a few feet inside the trailhead, you'll be able to go right or left at the fork in the path. Don't worry about your selection too much as the trail is a loop that will take you approximately two hours to complete. The right fork takes you through Sanitas Valley before heading nearly straight up the side of the mountain. The left fork (my preferred route) is a little less steep, but is overall a longer climb. Remember to bring plenty of water as the area typically gets pretty hot during the day. Below are some of the views you can expect on a climb of Mt. Sanitas.

Denver-based freelance writer, Scott DeMers, hails originally from the bustling metropolis of Valley City, ND (population: 7,000). Discovering at the age of 22 that he was free to go, he has seldom stopped moving since. Scott travels to the beat of his own drum as proven by celebrating the millennium New Year in Edinburgh, Scotland while most sane people were heading someplace warm. Being present for the march of a thousand bagpipers on a crisp December night helped prove that his choice was a wise one.

Always a willing participant in any misadventure, Scott possesses a sense of humor that is decidedly left of center. Thankfully, his thirst for travel and desire to write about it can be put to good use here on JohnnyJet.com.

When not traveling, Scott can be found in downtown Denver where he is raising his 4 year old son and doing his best to stay out of trouble. No guarantees on the latter….
