Emirates Launches New Radio iPhone and iPod Touch Application
    by Lindsay Taub

Oftentimes, the best way to get immersed in the culture of a new place is to listen to their music. Now, without leaving your home, you can get a feel for a new destination using Emirates' new Destination Radio App for iPhone and iPod Touch. Now available on iTunes, the Dubai-based international airline carrier has created an app that gives travelers a means to explore destinations through music.

The app includes 97 cities around the world to choose from, representing the six continents that Emirates services worldwide.

Let's say for example, you want to listen to what's on the radio in Johannesburg. Scroll around the app's virtual globe to South Africa, tap your finger on the city and you get the current song on the radio live streaming, along with current weather and time from that area. Want to know what people in Amman or Mumbai are listening to? No problem.

The quality of the streaming is surprisingly good without any interruptions or buffering, as long as your Internet or wireless connection is strong. There are some advertisements but nothing more than what the average Pandora radio listener would expect.

Each city has one chosen station, which means that for Los Angeles, for example, listeners from abroad will get the current feed from 93.1 Jack-FM, which plays classic rock from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. It might not represent Los Angeles culture as a whole, but it can give a traveler a sense of its musical vibe. The same is probably true of the other cities featured in the app. You can enjoy it for what it is – a taste of local musical interests.

The free app also includes convenient access to Emirates' mobile website and several phone numbers for Emirates' flight information, customer services, and the ability to book a flight directly from your phone.

Travelers who download the Destination Radio app by October 11, 2011, have the opportunity to enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win two round-trip economy class tickets to any of Emirates' 113 cities around the world. For more information about the app, visit Emirates.com/DestinationRadio or download the app directly from the iTunes store.

Emirates currently flies twice daily from Los Angeles, Houston and New York City, and daily from San Francisco non-stop to Dubai and beyond.
