- Is Nicaragua Safe? At the end of October, the U.S. State Department issued not a travel warning but a “public announcement” regarding travel to Nicaragua, referring to “the potential for violent demonstrations leading up to the national election in Nicaragua on Nov. 5” and not expiring until next April. The announcement also warns that “protests and demonstrations can be unpredictable in time, place and intensity.” The Nicaraguan Tourism Board responded by pointing out that there have been no violent acts or demonstrations other than peaceful political prearranged ones, and also publicized statistical reports from both the United Nations and Interpol that “Nicaragua is the safest country in the Americas.” All hotels, airports, restaurants and travel services in Nicaragua have been operating uninterrupted. The State Dept. has not explained its rationale, and State Dept. security personnel have been quoted as saying they saw no reason for the announcement. Various political pundits, from Oliver North to Robert Novak, have called it a political move to try to keep away Americans who might try to influence the election, and/or to show disapproval of the anticipated outcome. Despite U.S. opposition, former president Daniel Ortega was elected Sunday in a huge turnout; no disturbances were reported. SOURCE: GlobalTravelerusa.com
