Is your destination or neighborhood lucky enough to have ZipCar? This is a new way to rent cars in a select few cities (currently Boston, Chapel Hill, Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York/New Jersey, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington D.C.). They will expand soon to 13 other cities (see website for details). What’s great about ZipCar is that after you sign up for membership ($100 fully refundable membership deposit and a non-refundable $25 application fee) there are no lines to stand in or forms to fill out. Customers can rent a variety of cars (Minis, VWs, hybrids and BMWs) for fees usually lower than rental car agencies, and by the hour. Prices start around $10 an hour and
$69 a day (both rates are lower
if you choose the extra value plan). That’s not all: The price includes gas, insurance and parking. There are no extra fees for drivers under 25.
ZipCars can be found spread out all over a city, in designated parking spots.
