 WEBSITE OF THE WEEK |
- Google.com/sms/howtouse.html
These days all we hear about it Google this and Google that. There's a good reason: These guys keep introducing amazing technology that is especially helpful for travelers. Google Text Messaging (also called SMS) is at the top of the list. All you need is a cell phone to find local information like the weather, restaurants, shops, movie times, detailed driving directions, even currency conversions and translations. Let’s say you’re in a hotel in NYC, and you want pizza delivered. Just type “pizza,” and either the zip code or city and state. Separate them by a period (pizza.10013 or pizza.new york ny); then send your inquiry to the address GOOGL (46645). Within seconds a list of area pizza places will be sent to your phone. You can search for a specific business like Pizza Hut too (but please don’t order Pizza Hut in NYC -- that's a sin). It also works for retail stores like Pottery Barn. All you need to remember is a few prompts (here’s a link to in-depth instructions on using Google Text Messaging, and a cheat sheet in a pdf file).
