WHERE'S
JOHNNY
JET?
No later than 8 hours after I opened up my big
mouth I run into the same ole' priest I used to see at LAX. This time he
was standing in the mist of the long security line staring at me.
As promissed I was going to surprise Amber on one of her layovers for
Valentines Day. I was hoping it was going to be a long layover (23
hours), and a cool location (Like Miami, or Vega$), but I was wrong on
both. She first called and said she was going to be laying over in Manchester
(New Hampshire). I was like Manchester... ughhh. Then she called right
back and said they switched it to Minneapolis, for a 10 hour layover. I
just kept shaking my head. Minneapolis in February? For 10 Hours?
I said to myself "I wanted a cool location not cold". Well, at least
it's not Shanghai! BTW: Did I mention I had to connect through ORD, both
ways.
I packed my bag and went to LAX. I was running late as usual arriving an hour before departure, bad boy Johnny. Zipped through the 1K line and got held up at the long security line. The first long line was just check point for ticketed passengers, no id's required so that went by quick. Once you got beyond that check point, trouble. The lines were long, I mean real long. People's facial expression coming around the corner were priceless. Luckily they had a First Class/Premier line which only took about 15 minutes but felt since I was running late it felt more like 45 minutes. They really need to get more machines and man power. I made it on the plane and was chatting to my cool seat mate. The flight attendants were getting ready to close the door and I got a page that said we were going to be departing 45 minutes late. I told that to the dude next to me (BTW: he worked for United) and he said it's wrong. I said I don't think so, my resources are pretty reliable. Sure enough 2 minutes later the pilot gets on the PA and says we have a small mechanical problem ..... and we will be leaving....... that's right 45 minutes late. The dude had his mouth open wide and said "how the heck did you know that before everyone else?" I said "let me introduce myself.....Jet, Johnny Jet" :-)
We land in dreary Illinois and I sneak around O'Hare airport so Amber
doesn't spot me. Luckily I didn't get arrested for suspicious behavior.
I board the plane and see that Amber is working in the back (She had no
idea I was there). I took my seat and when she walked right by me I said
with a smile "Excuse me Miss! I'm having a hard time buckling my seat belt,
can you help?". She does a double take and gives me a big
hug. Brownie points added! We arrive in MSP an hour later
at 9:30pm and go right to the
hotel. I love traveling with crew members because they know the
airports better than me.
Wake up the next morning at 6am, and go right back to MSP for an 8am
departure. I know....What about Mall Of America? The Timber wolves? Ice
Skating? Nope, sorry, no time. Flight Attendants don't have it that good.
I mean come on give them a chance to relax, sight see, sleep.... I think
the FAA should mandate a minimum 15 hour layover to ensure a good nights
rest to the crew.
We arrive at ORD 10 minutes early and run to an earlier LA flight.
The Customer Service lady was surprisingly really rude and denied me boarding.
Imagine that? No chocolates for her! I walked away with an evil smile
and went to another gate and had them call a Supervisor. 10 minutes
later that situation was rectified and I was on a earlier non-stop (She
got a JJ T-Shirt).
I get back to L.A. and go right to work on Johnny Jet. How do you like
that new menu? Pretty nifty huh?
No time to sit still and relax, because Saturday morning we headed
down to Long Beach for the LA Times Travel Show. It's always good to go
to because they have great
speakers and panels.
I was fortunate to hang out with some of my
mentors; Rudy Maxa (The Savvy Traveler) , Don George (Editor Of
Lonely Planet), Peter Greenberg (Travel Editor At NBC), Pauline
Frommer (Frommers).... These people are awesome and I hope to be
doing what they do one day.
After hanging with the big guns, Amber and I go across the street to
the
new
Long Beach Wharf. I must say I was quite impressed. I love the
colors! We had a good mexican dinner at Tequila Jacks and jumped back in
the car. From there we kept heading South and ended up in San Diego
to see her Father
on his B-day. We were only in SD for about 18 hours and then back on
the road, where I belong.

AIRLINE SECURITY AND TINY TRAVELERS
"My granddaughter, age 12, will be visiting in March. Will I be allowed
to meet her at the gate and go with her to the gate for her return flight?
Do I need to make prior arrangements for this? Do I need special documentation?"
As most of you probably know, new federal guidelines for airport security prevent anyone other than ticketed passengers from going through security to a boarding gate. One of the big exceptions is an adult dropping off or meeting a minor who is traveling alone.
Every airline has different policies about this, so definitely check with your carrier. Most post their policy on their website.
In general, you’ll need to go to the airline’s ticket counter well before the flight arrives, and fill out some forms explaining who you are, who you’re picking up and what your relationship is. You’re not likely to need any kind of documents other than a photo ID, but PLEASE check with your individual airline. With my luck, your granddaughter will be booked on the one air carrier that requires birth certificates, DNA testing and a box of family scrap books.
It works the same way, in reverse, when you’re accompanying a minor to the gate. Make sure you get to the airport early enough to do the proper paperwork at the ticket desk.
It is also a good idea to have an unaccompanied child carry a piece of paper listing detailed information about who will be meeting them at the gate. Make sure the paper is in the child’s pocket or carry-on bag, and not inside any checked luggage. It won’t do much good there

The "new" Pan Am--which is based
at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and operates to airports like Sanford, Fla.
And Gary, Indiana--appears to have some big plans for the future. A United
Airlines affiliate said last week it is selling 24 of United's recently
retired 727-200s to Pan
Am, along with three 727 flight simulators for pilot training. Pan
Am hasn't yet said how it will use the aircraft.
