Celeb Sightings: Van Earl Wright, sports anchor of the National Sports Report on Fox Sports Net was spotted playing a round at The Lakes Golf Course in El Segundo; Bob Gollic, former LA Raider turned TV broadcaster at the Wells Fargo Bank, Manhattan Village, coincidentally in line behind him was the daughter of NFL Hall of Famer and former LA Raider, Mike Haynes. Small world; and Tara Ried of American Pie fame having breakfast at the Beach Hut, Hermosa Ave, HB last Sunday. Apparently she is really tiny, five-foot-one at the most. Ah Hollywood, ever the illusion. Full Circle: The New Wooden Shoe Café, PCH, RB, a PCH landmark since 1960, is back in the Botello family now that Michael Botello bought it back from John Georgoulis who bought it from Wally Botello, (Michael’s father), back in 1979. The biggest change is the big “yiassou!” to the Greek menu as it got the boot, the new beach décor and some other renovations are also underway. The resto is open for breakfast and lunch, dinner service should begin by months end. Back: Open Mic Night at Dano’s, Hermosa Ave, HB, every Wednesday. Check out local talent or show ‘em what you got. Change of Residence: Shin and Tony B, formerly of Cal Beach Sushi, Hermosa Ave, HB, are now slicing and dicing up at Xinh Doi, upper level of the Redondo Beach Pier. Monday nights they have All-You-Can-Eat sushi and appetizers for $19.95per person from 5-10pm. Closed: The Beach Hut, Highland Ave, MB. Anniversary: Happy first year in biz to Suzy’s, Aviation, HB. Fourth Of July Observation: How many little girls did you see running around The Strand in American flag bikini tops and blue sequin wraps? Was wondering if they gave out group discounts at “Forever 21.”
Freebie: Get a FREE “Make-A-Wish Ice Cream Creation” at Cold Stone Creamery, Hermosa Ave, HB tonight, Thursday, July 11 from 5-8pm. Donations are encouraged and will be forwarded to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and, in honor of National Ice Cream Month, a portion of sales generated throughout the month of July will also go to benefit the charity…
Friday Night Event: PubClub.com and JohnnyJet.com, (the complete travel portal), is hosting a “Friday Night Foreplay” party at Baja Sharkeez, Highland, MB tomorrow, July 12, 7-10pm. Drink specials, contests, prizes including anti-hangover pills, and more. For details go to PubClub.com…
Bleu, Blanc, Rouge: Bastille Day is this Sunday, July 14 - an excuse to drink wine? As if you needed one. This French National Holiday celebrates the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille prison, the start of the French Revolution in 1789. It became a symbol of historical dimension, proof that the power no longer resided in the King or in God, but in the people. So do SOMETHING French, please, humor me – drink wine, eat cheese, go topless on the beach, kiss. Area restos will be having specials and if you really want to go all out, call the French American Chamber of Commerce at 323.651.4741 or visit www.faccla.org for more ideas. Vive la France…
Home Of The Brave: Last chance to see “Faces of Ground Zero: A Photographic Tribute To America’s Heroes,” on display at the Skirball Cultural Centre, North Sepulveda, LA as it closes this Sunday, July 14. LIFE photographer Joe McNally used a garage-sized Polaroid camera to produce the larger than life 9-by-4 foot photos of emergency workers, survivors and relatives of victims that capture the true anguish of those directly affected by the September 11 attacks. A brief quote accompanies each photo. The exhibition has traveled from New York to London, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco and will return to NY for the one-year anniversary of the attacks. Admission is free. Call 440.4500 or check out skirball.org for more info. I know this has nothing to do with the bar scene, but it is close to my New York heart, and I have the pen here…
Sports: After Byung-Hyun Kim’s meltdown in last year’s World Series against the Yanks he was at it again on another big stage: The All-Star Game this past Tuesday night. I don’t think Sure deodorant will be calling him anytime soon to be their new spokesperson. To Bud Selig, BS move calling the game. Lame. Arizona comes to Chavez this week-end Thursday-Sunday to take on the Dodgers. Go on the 11th for rally towel night rather than the 14th when they will be handing out noise-makers which will be fun for five minutes and then probably drive you crazy...
