Elliott, a consumer advocate and travel industry critic, is National Geographic
Traveler’s ombudsman, a member of USA Today’s board of contributors,
a commentator for National Public Radio, a business travel columnist for Central.com
and MSN and a contributing editor for US News & World Report. Elliott has
founded numerous Web sites dedicated to consumer advocacy, including Ticked.com,
which Canada’s National Post called “a superb resource” for

Frommer is executive editor of Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel Magazine
and the de facto travel editor of MSNBC.com. She is a former editor-in-chief
of Frommers.com and was at its helm when it won the People’s Voice Webby
Award. She has written feature articles for the Frommer’s Web site, Budget
Travel magazine, the Budget Travel site, the Dallas Morning News and Marie Claire.
She is a co-author with her father, Arthur Frommer, of “The New World of
Travel.” In 1998, she was awarded a Lowell Thomas medal from the Society
of American Travel Writers for her article on “Swapping Homes.”
She has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, the CBS Evening News, the Oxygen Network, Business

George has been a travel writer and editor for more than two decades. Currently
the global travel editor for Lonely Planet, George writes the award-winning Traveler
at Large column for lonelyplanet.com and serves as Lonely Planet’s global
spokesperson. He has also been the travel editor at the San Francisco Examiner & Chronicle
and the editor of Salon.com’s travel site, Wanderlust. He has edited four
anthologies, including Lonely Planet’s “The Kindness of Strangers” and “A
House Somewhere: Tales of Life Abroad,” and has published more than 600
articles in magazines and newspapers around the globe. George has received dozens
of awards for his writing and editing, including the 2002 Pacific Area Travel
Assn. Gold Award for Best Travel Article and the Society of American Travel Writers
2002 Lowell Thomas Award. He has also worked as a teacher in Athens, a translator
in Paris and a TV talk show host in Tokyo. George is co-founder and chairman
of the annual Book Passage Travel Writers Conference, and has been a visiting

Times. He first began using the Web as a travel resource in 1996. His articles

"Today” travel editor Greenberg is an Emmy Award-winning
producer
and writer. Greenberg is also chief correspondent for Discovery Network’s
Travel Channel and editor-at-large for National Geographic Traveler magazine.
His book, “The Travel Detective: Secrets You Can’t Leave Home Without,” was
a New York Times bestseller. In his latest book, “The Travel Detective
Flight Crew Confidential,” Greenberg reveals secrets that, until now, only
pilots and flight attendants knew. Also an authority on aviation safety and security
who travels more than 400,000 miles a year, Greenberg has been on the front lines
as a reporter on travel in the age of terrorism. He has appeared on “The
View,” “The O’Reilly Factor,” MSNBC and Fox News, besides
his regular appearances on "Today” and “The Oprah
Winfrey Show.”
The former West Coast correspondent for Newsweek also hosts “The Travel
Detective,” a weekly call-in show for KABC-AM (790) in Los Angeles. He
has received the Distinguished Service Award in Journalism from the University
of Wisconsin and the Aviation Space Writers Assn. of America Award for an investigative
piece on Good Morning America titled “Planes With a Past.”
SANDRA GUSTAFSON

Gustafson has lived in Paris, Prague and Singapore and has traveled extensively
throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Her passion for travel has led to
a series of travel books published by Chronicle Books. The “Great Eats/Great
Sleeps” series began as a notebook of recommendations she shared with friends
and has blossomed into a trusted travel companion used by many.
Gustafson does all her own research and personally visits every location featured
in her books.
She currently eats and sleeps in Southern California.

Travel Photography: Making the Best Snap Decisions
Hamm is the editor of the Los Angles Times Travel section. She also has been
the editor of the Californian in Salinas and managing editor and city editor
of the San Bernardino County Sun. During the dozen years she spent at the Kansas
City Star, she was the deputy managing editor and travel editor. She is a native
of Syracuse, N.Y., and counts McLean, Va., Honolulu and Manila among the places
she has called home.
MARK EDWARD HARRIS
Travel Photography: Making the Best Snap Decisions
After graduating from Cal State L.A. with a master of arts degree in Pictorial/Documentary
History, Harris started his professional photography career doing stills for “The
Merv Griffin Show.” When the show ended in 1986, he set off on a four-month
trek throughout Southeast Asia, China and Japan. The images created on that trip
brought attention to his travel photography. He since has photographed in more
than 60 countries. His work has appeared in Life, Stern, Playboy, Vogue, Elle,
People, American Photo, the New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Angeleno,
Westways and the Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine. His commercial clients range
from Gap for fashion photography to cruise lines and airlines for travel photography.
He has received a CLIO Award and an Aurora Gold Award for his photographic work
and an Ace Award for directing and producing a video for television. His first
solo exhibition was held at the Nikon Salon in Japan in 1992. In 1998, Abbeville
Press published his book “Faces of the Twentieth Century: Master Photographers
and Their Work,” which won the New York Book Show Photography Book of the
Year and Best of Show awards. His newest book, “The Way of the Japanese
Bath,” was published in February 2003.
JAIN LEMOS

Lemos, an accomplished picture professional, has more than 15 years of photography
editing and publishing experience. Lemos has worked as a senior producer, editor,
writer and photography book packager for prominent publishers including Harper
Collins, Chronicle Books and Pearson PLC. She produced the New York Times bestseller “James
Cameron’s Titanic,” a behind-the-scenes book on the making of the
blockbuster movie “Titanic.” Lemos has been an active member of the
American Society of Picture Professionals since 1989, holding several offices
including president of the New York Chapter and Web editor. Currently she is
marketing director of Americas for Lonely Planet Images, the photography licensing
division of Lonely Planet Publications.
RUDY MAXA
Travel Savvy: Does Budget Mean Broke?
Maxa, a former Washington Post investigative reporter, began covering the travel
industry 13 years ago for National Public Radio’s evening business show “Marketplace.” His
biweekly commentaries under the moniker “The Savvy Traveler” are
currently heard by nearly 5 million listeners. His "Marketplace" appearances
led to the creation of a one-hour weekend version of “The Savvy Traveler” that
Maxa hosted from its inception in 1997 until 2001. He remains the weekend program’s “expert
in residence” and can be heard on nearly 200 public radio stations in the
U.S. His 13-part PBS-TV series, “Smart Travels: Europe with Rudy Maxa,” started
airing on public television stations in April 2001. In March 2002, PBS stations
began broadcasting his one-hour PBS pledge special, “Traveling Smart with
Rudy Maxa.” His public television series on Europe began its second season
on PBS stations in April 2003.
Maxa’s Traveler newsletter is in its fifth year of publication. His travel
articles have appeared in the Washington Post, Forbes, GQ, Travel & Leisure,
the Los Angeles Times, Ocean Drive, Self, WORTH and National Geographic Traveler.
He is a frequent guest on CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox News and “Live with Regis & Kelly.”
BRUCE MCINDOE

McIndoe is the a founder and CEO of iJET Travel Risk Management, a
company that provides proactive, real-time intelligence to help travelers
avoid problems before and during a trip. As an expert in security,
intelligence and risk management, he created an "intelligence
agency" for the travel industy. His groundbreaking efforts were
recently recognized by Business Travel News naming him as one of the
"Top 25 Most Influential People in the Travel Industry."
McIndoe has been cited as a travel security expert on NBC Nightly
News, MSNBC, the BBC, numerous newpapers and is an active speaker
at conferences and for industry groups such as the ACTE and NBTA.
Prior to iJET, McIndoe founded CSSI, a company that developed systems
for national intelligence organizations that was later sold to Nichols
Reseach Corporation and then by Computer Sciences Corporation. He
holds an MS in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University and
is a trustee of Allegheny College, where he received his bachelor's
of science degree in physics.
BARBARA PETERSON

Peterson is a contributing editor of Conde Nast Traveler, and is an online commentator
for cntraveler.com, the publication’s Web site. Peterson has worked as
a magazine writer for more than 20 years. Her freelance articles have appeared
in the New York Times, New York Post, San Francisco Chronicle and Consumer Reports.
She has also written television scripts for CNBC’s “Travel Tips” segment.
She was the chief contributor for the book “Fly Easy,” published
by Fodor’s last year. Her previous affiliations include Frequent Flyer
and Diversion magazine. Peterson, co-author of “Rapid Descent: Deregulation
and the Shakeout in the Airlines,” is working on a book about Jet Blue
Airways, which will be published by Penguin later this year.
JIM RICHARDSON
Travel Photography: Making the Best Snap Decisions
Photojournalist Richardson has worked primarily for the National Geographic Society
since 1985 as a freelancer, and he is a contributing editor for the National
Geographic Traveler Magazine. He has also worked at the Topeka Capital-Journal
and the Denver Post. His documentary photographs taken in Kansas have been featured
by Charles Kuralt on CBS News “Sunday Morning,” have twice received
a Special Recognition Award for World Understanding from Nikon, and have traveled
the world in Richardson’s audiovisual show “Reflections from a Wide
Spot in the Road.” In 1979, Richardson published his first book, “High
School USA,” a three-year study of adolescence in Rossville High School.
The photo essay was excerpted in Life magazine. Richardson has six other book
titles to his credit and also has been involved in the “Day in the Life” series
of books, which gathers some of the world’s best photographers to document
a place for 24 hours. He has lectured in the National Geographic Society’s "Masters
of Photography" series four times and offered intensive travel photography
seminars for The Maine Photographic Workshops. In 2001, the ABC News’ program
Nightline followed Richardson working in the field and at the society’s
headquarters in Washington, D.C., on a National Geographic piece on the Columbia
River. The program, “Yellow Journalism: The Making of National Geographic
Story,” represented the first time the society has allowed an outside journalist
to document its behind-the scenes editorial process.
SUSAN SPANO
The Wheelers, Creators of the Lonely Planet guidebooks
Spano has been a staff travel writer for the Los Angeles Times for six years.
Before that, she originated the “Frugal Traveler” column for the
New York Times Travel section. Her essays and stories have been widely anthologized,
and she is the author of several books (including “Women on Divorce: A
Bedside Companion” and “Men on Divorce: The Other Side of the Story”).
KATHY SUDEIKIS
Internet or Travel Agent: Which is Right for You?
Sudeikis, the vice president of corporate relations for All About Travel in Mission,
Kan., is serving her second consecutive term as the national vice president of
the American Society of Travel Agents . Previously, Sudeikis served two years
as national secretary on ASTA’s executive committee.
A working travel agent, Sudeikis appeared in the September 2002 edition of Travel
and Leisure magazine’s “Super Travel Agent” feature.Also in
2002, Sudeikis was recognized as Travel Agent of the Year by the readers of Travel
Trade magazine.
A 32-year industry veteran, Sudeikis has been quoted in various publications,
including the Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles
Times and USA Today. She has appeared on “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,” “The
Today Show” and “CBS This Morning.” She has also appeared on
National Public Radio, Radio Free Europe and the Armed Forces Radio Network.
Sudeikis has addressed the National Tour Assn. the Travel Industry Assn. of America
and the Travel Agent Assns. of India, South Africa, Australia and Germany.
Sudeikis earned her Certified Travel Counselor distinction in 1976 from the Institute
of Certified Travel Agents and was awarded a lifetime membership in 1983. She
serves on Travel Agent Advisory Boards for American Express Travel Related Services,
the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co., the German National Tourist Office, Rail Europe and
Thrifty Car Rental.
She has appeared in Travel Agent magazine’s “100 Most Powerful Women” in
1999-2002.

With more than 30 years of commercial travel industry experience, Trippler is
considered to be an authority on the airlines and the rules that govern their
operation.
Trippler began his career as an airline ticket agent and has since held several
industry positions from which he learned the trade. Today, he specializes in
airline rules and regulations. In January 2003, Trippler joined CheapSeats.com
as its senior air traveler advocate.
Trippler has been quoted as an expert on the air transportation industry in such

Tony Wheeler, Creator of the Lonely Planet guidebooks
Wheeler has been described by the New York Times as the “trailblazing patron
saint of the world’s backpackers and adventure travelers.” He was
born in Britain, but grew up in Pakistan, the Bahamas, Detroit and Baltimore.
He studied engineering at Warwick University in Britain and worked as a mechanical
engineer with a British car manufacturer before returning to university to pursue
a master’s degree in business administration at the London Business School.
