PROFILE 
Named editor-in-chief of National Geographic Traveler magazine in January 1998
and now a Vice-President of the National Geographic Society, Keith Bellows, 50,
is a seasoned traveler and editorial executive.
Prior to joining the National Geographic Society, Mr. Bellows was executive
producer of Excite, the fifth largest site on the Internet and one of the
world's leading search engines and content aggregators. His cyberspace
experience also includes developing and launching BabyCenter, aSan
Francisco-based Internet and print service. He was the founder and creative
director of WestWorld Media, LLC, an Internet and print media development and
production company that created projects for Metallica, A&E and Vegetarian
Times. Mr. Bellows has also consulted with Prodigy News Corp., Cowles Media,
Jupiter Entertainment and Picture Network International, a Tribune Media online
service.
Mr. Bellows was editor of the Smart Health/Smart Parenting Division of the New
York-based Meigher Communications, where he ran its hospital/HMO publications
group, creating and editing Smart Parenting; developing and editing Friends
magazine, a 300,000 circulation, general interest publication; and as Meigher's
special projects editor, developing publication concepts for Hallmark, America's
Health Network, The Discovery Channel and Big Time, a children's magazine for
Disney and a series for the Utne Reader.
From 1993 to 1995, Mr. Bellows was president and founding partner of the Media
Development Group, Inc., a Tennessee media company that created and launched new
media properties, including the development of City Passports, a series of
travel titles, and The 1996 Guide to the Atlanta Olympics for Marblehead
Communications.
Mr. Bellows spent 12 years at Whittle Communications where he developed and
managed more than 30 magazine, audio and video projects, including Whittle's
flagship, Special Report communications system of 24 annual magazines. He was
also creator and executive producer for the companion hourly Special Report
television show featuring Joan Lunden.
Among the media outlets Mr. Bellows has worked for are Sports Illustrated, ESPN
and Reader's Digest. He is the author of "The Canuck Book" and the 1998 Winter
Olympics ACCESS Guide for ABC-TV. He is an experienced public speaker and
workshop instructor and is currently writing a book about working in America.
Born in Zaire and a Canadian citizen, Mr. Bellows is a graduate of Gordonstoun
School in Scotland and Dartmouth College. He resides in Washington, D.C. and
New York City.
