SUSAN'S ANSWERS
HOW OFTEN DO YOU FLY?
As little as possible these days. I’m leaning toward domestic driving trips and cruises from my home port for the foreseeable future.
IN A YEAR HOW MANY MILES/POINTS DO YOU EARN?
Under 50,000.
WHAT CLASS OF SERVICE DO YOU MOSTLY FLY IN?
Business.
FAVORITE AIRLINE?
Lufthansa.
FAVORITE AIRCRAFT?
They haven’t built it yet. Least favorite: 737 because it forces one to become far too intimate with one’s fellow passengers.
FAVORITE HOTEL?
Four Seasons Hotel Washington, D.C. They once sent up a complimentary silver platter with home-baked dog biscuits for my cocker spaniel — plus a note from the assistant-assistant manager welcoming him to the property.
FAVORITE HOTEL AMENITY?
Bulgari bath products. Just like drugs, the first taste’s always free — and then (sigh) they hook you.
FAVORITE AIRPORT?
Keflavik International Airport, Iceland. The shopping is outstanding. Even if you’re not a Björk fan, you can find great merchandise that’s not available anywhere else.
FAVORITE AIRPORT TO PASS TIME IN?
same as above
FAVORITE CITY?
New York — because it continually re-invents itself.
FAVORITE RESTAURANT?
Lespinasse, in New York’s St. Regis Hotel. You haven’t lived until you’ve dined on the lobster in black-truffle sauce.
AISLE OR WINDOW?
Aisle. Unless the rest of the row is empty. Then window.
ETICKET OR PAPER?
Paper. A traveler is at enough of a disadvantage when she has to deal with gate attendants.
TRAVEL AGENT OR ONLINE?
Online.
FAVORITE TRAVEL WEBSITE?
Honeymoons from About.com, of course (http://honeymoons.about.com). I’ve been writing it for five years now.
FAVORITE TRAVEL COMPANION?
My husband. Hardly anyone else I know is willing to carry my bags.
IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A TROPICAL ISLAND, WHAT THREE ITEMS WOULD YOU WANT TO HAVE WITH YOU?
1. Satellite phone.
2. Complete set of Henckels knives.
3. Large purse containing:
a. Unlimited supply of matches.
b. Calamine lotion.
c. SPF 50 sunblock/moisturizer.
d. Shortwave radio.
BEST TRAVEL TIP:
Travel against the crowds for the best rates and service: Visit Europe in the early spring, the southern Caribbean (outside the hurricane belt) and ski resorts in the summer, Canada in the winter, Las Vegas at Christmas.
