Joey Travel: A New Way to Meet Locals Over Coffee or Drinks

joeyHave you ever traveled to a city and wished you knew someone so you could get the 411 and make friends? If so, and if you don’t have a large following on Facebook or other social media handles, you might want to consider Joey. This website offers travelers a place to book coffee or drinks with a local (a “Joey”).

All of Joey’s locals have been hand-selected for their passion for meeting travelers and sharing what they love about their communities. In the future, the site will offer additional ways to connect with locals before, during and after your trip—like having a friend welcome you to their hometown. In addition to what’s listed, they “have locals in over 100 pre-launch cities with whom [they’d] be happy to connect you.”

Prices range from $20 to $75 for a meetup. Since San Francisco is their launch city, they have the most locals to choose from there. Other cities might just have one option right now. It’s a brilliant idea and I love their mission, “to help travelers get off the beaten path and get in touch with local communities.”

Good to know: If you aren’t traveling alone, they charge $15 for each additional traveler. The price includes one drink per person.

  1. since I only travel solo I have seen ‘hire a local’ sites before that allow you to pay someone to spend time with you.
Perhaps the eat with sites are less ‘pay to go’….but i would hire a local in a location that may be too difficult to negotiate on my own or has a language barrier I cant manage…………but Greeters is another great group to meet locals.

  2. …….and who vettes whom? (Did I spell that correctly?)

  3. Another great resource is 5W (Women Welcoming Women World Wide). There is a membership fee to join and receive the directory. Many women coming to New Orleans have contact me prior to arrival to ask advice on restaurants, sites, hotels, etc. It has been my pleasure to welcome 5Ws from Europe, Canada, England, and Australia (so far). There are members all over the world and I hope that soon others will travel here. The three members in New Orleans have met and we shared stories of our guests. Sometimes it is just for a cup coffee or a ride around the city. The host and guest arrive on amount of time, where to go, and what to do. But I will certainly try Joey as another means to meet locals when I travel and get to know more about the people and place I am visiting. Thanks for the recommendation.
