Edit: The 100,000 point Marriott offer has expired, but you can see the current offer here: Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card
Chase has raised the sign-up offer on the Marriott Premier credit card to 100,000 points! The standard bonus on the Marriott Premier card historically has been 50,000 points (or 80,000 points the last year), so this increase of 50,000 points is 100% more than the standard offer. This 100,000 point offer on the Marriott Premier card is the highest ever offered!
Plus, you can earn 7,500 more bonus points if you add an authorized user and they make a purchase in the first 3 months of account opening.
To receive the bonus of 100,000 Marriott points, you must spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. You will also receive a free night stay at a category 1-5 location every year after your account anniversary date!
The annual fee of $85 isn’t waived for the first year, but the hefty bonus and other perks of this card can easily justify paying the fee.
If you’re interested in applying now for the new Marriott Premier offer, you can do so here: Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card
I recommend checking your credit score and history before applying for any credit cards.
For those of you who have had the Marriott Premier card before, it must be at least 24 months since you last received a bonus on your card to be eligible for a new card. Unfortunately, you can’t be a current Marriott Premier cardholder to be eligible, but being an authorized user won’t negatively impact you from being approved for your own personal Marriott Premier card. Also, if you’ve applied for 5 or more cards in the last 24 months – you most likely won’t be approved for the Marriott Premier rewards card.
Quick note and something to consider for non-Marriott loyalists: If you don’t currently hold the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you may want to apply for this card before the Marriott Premier. The Sapphire Preferred is widely considered one of the best travel rewards cards, and it has recently become harder to get approved for if you have had 5 or more credit card applications in the last 24 months. The current offer on the Sapphire Preferred is a sign-up bonus of 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months, and the $95 annual fee is waived for the first year.
Quick tip: with Starwood & Marriott merging the future of the cards aren’t clear. They could both be combining, so applying for them now is a smart move. There’s also the once a year limited time offer on the SPG card. You can also connect your SPG & Marriott accounts to transfer points. This means you can even transfer Ultimate Rewards to Marriott to SPG.
Marriott Premier Credit Card Perks
So what else does the Marriott Premier have to offer? First, in addition to 100,000 Marriott bonus points, you will receive a free certificate, good for a category 1-5 Marriott property, on every year after your account anniversary date. This free certificate can easily justify paying the annual fee. An example of a nice category 5 Marriott would be Denia Marriott La Sella Golf Resort & Spa in Spain. You can see all category 5 Marriott properties here.
The Marriott Premier rewards credit card has the added benefits of no foreign transaction fees and smart chip technology, which make international travel a breeze.
Marriott Premier cardholders are also rewarded when they use their card for Marriott purchases. As a member, you will earn 5 Marriott points per $1 for Marriott stays. In addition, you will earn 2 points per $1 on airline, car rental, and restaurant purchases. These are a nice add-on, but you can earn 2x points with the Sapphire Preferred on those same travel expenses, as well as dining. The Sapphire Preferred also earns Ultimate Rewards points, which are more flexible and can be transferred to Marriott Rewards.
If you’re a business traveler or you frequently stay at hotels, you may be interested in the fast track to Marriott Elite status that the Marriott Premier card offers you. To start, you will receive 15 elite credits upon approval, and at every cardmember anniversary date, which is good enough for Marriott Silver status. If you already have Silver status with Marriott, you will receive 15 elite credits toward the next elite status tier. Silver status with Marriott isn’t the best hotel status, but it comes with these perks.
In addition to the 15 elite night credits, you will receive 1 additional elite status credit for every $3,000 spent on the Marriott Premier card.
How Can You Use 100,000 Marriott Premier Rewards Points?
Marriott points can be redeemed in a variety of ways, and understanding these different methods of redemption is key to unlocking their value.
You can use your Marriott points for hotel nights in the Marriott & Ritz-Carlton program. Below is the standard Marriott award chart for their hotel properties.
As you can see in the image above, awards start at 7,500 points per night at category 1 Marriott properties. With the new 100,000 + 7,500 Marriott Premier offer, you can redeem over 12 rewards at this redemption rate! This could be a great strategy for families or those who don’t need to stay at the fanciest hotels. A decent category 1 Marriott property is the Courtyard Marriott at DFW airport. This hotel’s standard rate is usually over $100 a night, so that’s $1,200 in value that you can get from 100,000 Marriott points.
If you prefer to stay at nicer locations, you can redeem 100,000 Marriott points for 2 nights at a category 8 property. An example of a beautiful category 8 Marriott property is the Pier One Sydney Harbour. Rooms can run over $500 per night, so 100,000 points can get you $1,000+ in value at this location.
Redeem 4 Nights, Get the 5th Night Free
A nice perk of the Marriott rewards chart is that you will get the 5th night free if you redeem 4 consecutive award nights. This benefit enables you to stretch out the value of your points even further.
For example, you could book 4 nights at a category 4 Marriott property for 100,000 points, and receive the 5th night free. 5 award nights at a category 4 property is a very good redemption.
Hotel & Air
Marriott allows you use your points for airfare and hotel stays through their “Hotel & Air” redemptions. These packages start at 200,000 Marriott points. Pricey, but you will receive 7 nights at a category 1-5 hotel + airline miles (varies based on airline).
You will get a bonus of 10% on United MileagePlus redemptions, so 200,000 Marriott points would get you 7 free nights & 55,000 United MileagePlus miles.
To make a hotel & air redemption, you will need to call 1- 800-321-7396.
Cash & Points
Marriott now gives you the option to combine cash + points for a hotel redemption made online. This option is great for those looking to stretch out their points, or those who don’t have quite enough points for a redemption.
Tip: Make sure that you check the cash price of a hotel stay before booking a cash & points reward redemption. It might be a better value to just pay all cash or all points.
PointSaver awards help you save 33% off the standard award rates at Marriott properties. Finding PointSaver awards can be difficult, but when you do, you can save a significant amount of points. For example, a category 6 Marriott, which is normally 30,000 points per night, would be 25,000 points per night as a PointSaver redemption option.
Transfer to Airlines
If you don’t want to redeem your Marriott points for hotel nights, you also have the option to transfer your points out to an airline’s loyalty program. This can help top off your airline loyalty account balance for flights. Transfers to airlines aren’t done at a 1:1 ratio, so do the math to make sure it’s a good value for you.
Priority Pass Lounges
If you travel frequently and don’t have lounge access through airline elite status or a travel rewards credit card, you can spend 20,000 Marriott points for a Priority Pass. There are over 600 Priority Pass lounges worldwide.
If travel isn’t your ideal use for points, you can always redeem your Marriott points for merchandise. You receive less value on your points, but you can still get cool stuff for a good rate through the Marriott 10K Collection. The 10k Collection has popular items for 10,000 points and under.
Chase Ultimate Rewards Instantly Transfer to Marriott
If you need to add to your Marriott Rewards balance, you can instantly transfer in Chase Ultimate Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio.
You can earn Ultimate Rewards points through the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Ink business cards. In addition, the no annual fee Chase Freedom card earns Ultimate Rewards points that can be combined with points earned from the Sapphire Preferred or Ink Plus and then transferred.
The 100,000 point Marriott Premier offer is a significant increase from the standard bonus of 50,000 points. This 100,000 point + 7,500 offer has never come around before, so if you’re looking for a new travel rewards card, this might be the offer for you!
