reader-travel-tip2If They Don’t Have It, Bring It
Each Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Joseph R., who says:

“If you use artificial sweetener in your coffee or tea and you plan to visit England (or maybe other countries also), prepare to bring your own. We were in England in October and although the food was good most everywhere we went, some restaurants did not have any artificial sweetener on hand. You received quizzical looks when you asked for a particular brand or if you asked for any at all. Go to the big box store of your choice and buy the box of 1000 packets. I always keep a few in my travel pouch just in case. I’ve even had to pull out a few in a Starbucks right in Manhattan. Who would have thought that would be necessary?”

Not everybody uses artificial sweetener, but it’s definitely true that the essentials you’re used to back home may not be available out of country—so pack accordingly. Thanks, Joseph!

Unrelated: With the big winter storm forecasted, flights this weekend may be affected. Here’s what to do if you’re faced with weather delays and flight cancellations.

My slight expansion on that: carry anything that you like to use to modify food. Be that sugar/sweetener, salt, pepper, tabasco, ketchup. I’ve taken the extras provided in some restaurants when the waiter told me they would otherwise be thrown away and they’ve come in very useful!

Whilst I am not one for sweetening my drinks I can certainly see the value in this tip. I must admit though being a Brit who often visits the US I don’t see sweeteners in a lot of places either.

After many years of global travel I often find that different brands belong to different territories, so if there is a brand you particularly like and can’t do without then definitely bring it with you.

    Thanks for the tip.

I don’t use sugar/sweeteners…but I drink decaf, so I bring my own. Especially in the Caribbean, when I ask for decaf or “Sanka” I get funny looks! Thanks for the excellent advice Johnny!

    Go to any BOOTS Pharmacy.

    They’re all over the place.

    They have tablets and packets.

I brought several tablet dispensers home (to the USA) with me

    just to have something different.

I take Splenda on all foreign and domestic trips and never mess with all those little packets. Splenda sells tablets called Splenda Minis is 100 and 200 count dispensers. They are on line, haven’t seen them in retail outlets. The 100 count dispender is just a little larger than a dental floss dispenser.
