Hyderabad-India-Taj-Falaknuma-Palace-April-2012-068According to this New York Times article, some chefs are beginning to ban customers from taking pictures of their food. I think that’s a crazy move for most restaurants since it’s free publicity and there could be a major backlash. However, for the more popular and formal restaurants, I can understand the reasoning behind it. Flashes are distracting and some people are even getting up on chairs to get a better angle. Could this be a new trend?

Would you ban photos in your restaurant? Would you go to a restaurant that banned picture taking?

This has been going on for a long time. I’ve been to restaurants that ban pictures and always thought it was because of their “special decor” or something like that.

I would have seriously banned it if i was a restaurant owner/chef. I have seen some of the dishes so hideously photographed that i never even gave a thought of visiting that place. People take pictures of food mostly in a way that they look ugly. And honestly, Delicious and properly presented food deserves more than a phone camera with harsh flash!

If I went into a restaurant and took a picture of the food that I was served and was then told that I could not take the pictures, that would be the last time that I ever visited that restaurant no matter how good the food is/was. This has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard a restaurant doing.

    Hey Johnny,
Family response here. We were at Okra’s in Old Towne Manassas and we all took pictures of our food here. Management was great about it and asked what we were doing. We simply stated that we loved the look of our food and wanted to share the essence of our life with them. I think that it’s a 50/50 shot with pictures of food in restaurants, and it should be left up to the management to decide. Or take the picture for me! :)

I love taking a photo of a special meal and have not been stopped yet and if I were I would not be happy.
