Passport cover 720x360I recently received a question from a reader D. Graff that inspired this tip: “Three years ago you made a comment about a passport cover and gave a site to get one. I ordered two: one for my son and one for me. When we came back through customs the agent took the covers off and almost threw them at me. Told me I could NOT use them. What is the deal?”

Answer: You can use covers, and they are great for keeping your passport safe from wear and tear and also from crooks (if you get a cover that has RFID-blocking capability). However, agents do not like passport covers, so you’ll need to take your passport out before handing it to them no matter where you are in the world.

So, it sounds like we should use a Passport “sleeve” instead of a “cover”. Presumably, it would be easier to pull the passport out of a sleeve then to remove it from a cover.

    Passport covers:
I have used a clear plastic passport cover for many years now. We travel a lot internationally and I have never been asked to remove
it at any immigration point. Also never at any hotels or at any airline gates. Only once did an American Airlines ticket counter agent actually remove it … for some reason know only to herself.

A friend was turned away at JFK for an int’l flight about four years ago because his passport was de-laminating — it looked like it might have been tampered with. So he bought a clear plastic PP cover for a couple bucks, and when back the next day — and got through. He DID get a new, emergency passport while on-ground in the foreign country; the question remaining is whether immigration officers, today, are not *allowed* to take passports with covers on — seems likely….

I used roadeavour’s waterproof passport cover. The best!
