reader-travel-tip2Freezer Check
Each Friday, we’re featuring a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Ann S., who says:

“Since we’re usually eating from the freezer for the first day or two after returning from a trip, I almost always remember to make what I call a ‘freezer thaw tattletale.’ If your house loses power from time to time, especially in these rough summer storms, you may also wonder if the items in your freezer could have thawed and refrozen after power returned. I use a paper cup, or some other item to make a tall shape out of ice (or I use a flavored ice pop, removed from its packaging). I then remove the shaped ice piece and place it into a plastic bag. If the ice shape melts from a thaw, there will be a ‘puddle’ in the bag, but if there has been no thaw, the ice will remain in the shape.”

A great, clever tip. Thanks, Ann!

This is a very timely trip. I do a similar thing by freezing a small paper cup (bathroom dixie cup) and placing a penny on top once it is frozen. If the power ever fails, the penny will drop to the level the water thawed. I keep my “freezer friend” year round, so I never need to worry if there has been an issue.
