American's new B777-300ER landing in Los Angeles

Not All Planes Are Created or Configured Equal
Yesterday’s tip was about choosing a wide-body plane over a narrow-body one to improve your chances of an upgrade. Passengers can also take things one step further and find the best wide-body to fly on. For example, American Airlines currently has three wide-bodies on their LAX-Miami route: a 767, a 777-200 and a 777-300. Savvy passengers know that American’s business class on the 777-300 is by far its best product with its lie-flat seats.

In the AA example, one way to tell what your options are is to log on to AA.com and put in your city pairs. Then, look at each type of aircraft and click ”View seats” to see its configuration. On American’s 777-200, business class is configured 2-3-2, which is way too many seats and would be almost a waste of upgrade certificates (or money) if you get stuck in a middle seat. However, on the 777-300, there are only four seats across with a 1-2-1 configuration, which is obviously far superior.

Another way to find out your aircraft seating is by checking out SeatGuru.com. In any case, make sure to do your research!
