reader-travel-tip2Get a GOES Appointment while Traveling
Each Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Joe S., who says:

“My girlfriend and I just signed up for GOES (Global Entry, etc.). The calendar in LAX is booked solid through September already but we managed to get appointments for next weekend at SEA-TAC (Seattle). For frequent travelers, it might be worth just going to a different city altogether if their home base is tough to book.”

A great tip. Especially as we deal with security lines like this one, Global Entry and PreCheck (which comes with Global Entry) can be a huge help. I strongly recommend them. Thanks, Joe!

I had same issue with SFO. But then found I could get an interview in Honolulu with no problem so did that on vacation.

Great idea because the interview takes just minutes – a few questions, fingerprints and you’re out of there! We got in on a special session at our local airport RDU instead of having to drive 2 hours to Charlotte.

What a coincidence to read this to today! We’re flying out to AMS from IAH today and scheduled our appointment before our flight. And we already got approval emails. Yay!

This worked for me as well. After my application went through, I was so excited and tried to schedule my interview but found all locations in DC were booked for a few months. I already had a trip planned to visit friends in Arizona the next week, so I checked the Phoenix schedule and they had lots of spots open on the day I arrived at the airport. In and out in 10 minutes.

Wondering how long it takes to get a Nexus appointment in Seattle as I wanted to do it on vacation.

Ran into this in LAX so my wife and I made an appointment in San Ysidro at the Mexican border. Took train from LA, trolly to the birder and just steps from the office. Interview took 10 minutes, we had lunch in San Diego and trained back to LA. Very pleasant way to go. And appointments were readily available the last I checked at that office.

I got mine in Miami last year. Did it at the airport. I don’t remember the calendar being to bad, I think I had to wait three weeks maybe a month, but I mixed it up with a long beach weekend, so it panned out really easily for me. Agreed, that if you’re not in a super rush, and your town is all booked up, go somewhere else. Not sure why Miami was so relatively easy though.

I’ve been using Global Entry for several years and my membership will expire within the next year. Is Global Entry automatically renewed, or do we have to take any proactive steps to retain our status? Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You have to be proactive which reminds me mine expires too next year.
