From breakfast pie and lobster pie to pie-flavored beer and even a pi wedding, people are getting creative in their Pi Day celebrations and promotions for 3/14/15. Whether or not you can channel your inner math geek, how can you say no to a yummy pie?
This year the mathematical constant Pi Day (3/14) is pretty unique because not only does the month and day correspond to the digits of pi, but the digits in the year do, as well. The first five digits of pi—3.1415—correspond to 3/14/15. Hey, this happens but once a century!
If you really want to get technical, at 9:26:53 am and 9:26:53 pm on 3/14/15, the date and the time will exactly correspond to the first ten digits of pi: 3.141592653.
And now brace yourself as we bring you more than 3.141592653 ways to enjoy your Pi Day. Warning: You may get hungry as you continue reading.
1. Pi wedding
Those who want to pi the knot can head to Excalibur’s Wedding Chapel, where they’ve created a Pi Day wedding special that costs $314.15 (including tax). The package, only available this Saturday, includes use of the chapel, music, officiant services, three-rose bouquet, photographer, champagne flutes…and of course—an apple pie!
2. Airport pie
Yes, there’s even a PIE airport. If you’re flying in or out of the Tampa Bay area, PIE airport (St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport) is giving out free individual-sized pies (strawberry and key lime) a day in advance of Pi Day on Friday, March 13 from 1:30 to 3:14 pm.
3. Pie-flavored beers
Funky Buddha Brewery, located just north of Ft Lauderdale, is having a Pie Day party with lots of pie-flavored beers on tap including Key Lime Berlinerweiss, Bonita Applebum, Blueberry Cobbler, German Chocolate Cake, Red Velvet, and Carrot Cake. There will also be food trucks and many pies to go around.
4. Ride the pi wheel
The Las Vegas High Roller, the world’s tallest observation wheel, will give all guests who ride between 8:30 pm and 10:30 pm a free Pi Day T-shirt to commemorate the date and time. Guests can also order a “special shot” for $3.14 in a High Roller souvenir shot glass.
5. Lobster pot pie
On Pi Day at Michael Mina Bellagio, guests can feast on a non-traditional pie with Chef Mina’s famous spin on a comfort food classic. Lobster pot pie comes with a lobster in creamy brandied-lobster sauce, black truffles and seasonal vegetables. The dish is served tableside in a flaky pastry crust.
6. “American Pie” cocktail
Have an “American Pie” cocktail on Pi Day at Citizen’s Kitchen & Bar in Mandalay Bay Las Vegas. The Light Group’s mixologist Michael Monrreal created this all-American concoction consisting of American Harvest organic vodka and Leopold Bros. New York Sour Apple liqueur, which is balanced with spiced cider, apple juice and cinnamon.
7. #pieitforward fundraiser
Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab and is holding a#pieitforward fundraiser at locations in DC, Chicago and Las Vegas. If you purchase a slice of Chocolate Dipped Strawberry Ice Cream Pie with Marshmallow Sauce, $1 will be donated to a local charity in each city. They will also offer nine different delicious pies at $3.14 per slice.
8. Pies with 3 pi (9.42) apples
The Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC is offering a yummy Apple Pi Tartlet for Pi Day. Made with 3 Pi (9.42) Granny Smith apples, the hotel is celebrating with its version of the all-American apple pie. The Apple Pi Tartlet is topped with apples made of white chocolate.
9. Geocaching & breakfast pie
In Albany, Oregon, a local cafe joins a geocaching club to host a Pi Day geocaching celebration at the café. That’s right: There will be “breakfast pie” at Cafe Sirene in downtown Albany at exactly 3/14/15 at 9:26 am.
10. Pie secrets on Facebook
Three Brothers Bakery in Houston will partner with Southern Bite to answer burning baking or pie-making questions on Southern Bite’s Facebook page from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Followers can ask anything from what kind of apples make the best filling to how to create delicate latticework on any pie.
11. 3.14-mile fun run & pie eating
Illinois Science Council and Fleet Feet Sports will honor the importance of pi and running with a “Pi Day Pi K,” a 3.14-mile fun run complete with pie eating and a trivia contest. The races begin at exactly 9:26:53 am in Chicago and suburban Elmhurst. More details can be found at PiDayRun.org.
