5 tips for traveling to/from the airport during curfew

Continuing the theme from today’s travel tip—on the subject of whether you can travel to and from the airport during curfew—I’ve put together five additional tips for anyone who will be flying in or out of the U.S. while curfew rules are in place. Currently, a few airports (like LAX, SFO, DFW, and PHX; read more here) have clarified that travelers are permitted to travel, but many have not. If you need to fly and aren’t sure how to proceed safely and respectfully, you’re not alone.

Though not all airports/local authorities have confirmed it, I have to think that travel on pre-booked flights is permitted outside of curfew hours in most places. But given the current state of affairs, you shouldn’t simply travel to the airport as you normally would, on your normal route. A little extra planing may be necessary. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you need to get to/from the airport during curfew:

  • Contacting your airline in advance is probably a good step to take. And keep an eye on your flight status all the way until you need to leave for the airport.
  • Check in with your airports (arrival airport, too) before heading out. An easy way to do that is via Twitter. Here’s a list of airport Twitter handle that I created.
  • Note that while the airport may be open, transit lines and roads may not be operating normally. Check and plan your route in advance before setting off for the airport, and avoid traveling through protest areas whenever possible.
  • Make sure you have a printed boarding pass or other confirmation of your flight on hand in case you’re stopped.
  • And of course, don’t forget that we are still battling a pandemic. Wear a mask, which most airlines are requiring anyway.

I like how you mentioned that it’s probably a good idea to contact the airline you’re traveling on in an advance. My wife and I are thinking of looking for an airport transportation service because we’re considering taking our children to see my parents in my native country since they’ve never met them before. It seems like a good idea for us to think about choosing a reputable service that can get us to the airport since we’re traveling with kids and need to care for them.
