On Sunday night, the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London celebrated the culmination of two weeks of inspiring, international competition as well as showcased the Square Mile’s festive atmosphere.

In collaboration with Johnny’s recent  trip to the City of London and an effort to stir up some friendly competition of our own, we invite you to share a travel tip to one of our favorite cities. The contestant with the most useful tip (specific to London re: accommodations, transportation, food) will win this week’s travel swag bag valued at nearly $100 USD.

2. An autographed copy of Dancing in the Fountain, How to Enjoy Living Abroad: Author Karen McCann was a journalist in Ohio for two decades before she picked up one day and moved to Seville, Spain. With wit, humor, and insight, McCann describes her experiences and the realization that moving to Europe and taking a leap of faith doesn’t  always involve “buying a crumbling farmhouse and spending years restoring it with wise but semi-literate locals”. The book tells an engaging and realistic tale of how someone can create a modern life very much their own in a new and unfamiliar country. ($13.95)

3. NiceSeats: Designed to make any public seat a little nicer and a bit more comfortable, the NiceSeat is a soft, fabric cover that slips on over a seat in a matter of seconds. Experience the food! London turned out to be an amazing culinary experience! You must try St. John Bar and Restaurant, Aladin Inidan on Brick Lane, and the Borough Market. Also, note…When in need of a cold beer, they have extra cold beers on tap for those who are not used to room temp beers.

Place to stay….there are many choices for sure, but I would recommend the K&K George Hotel. It is near the Earl’s Court tube, has a great breakfast buffet (complete with champagne) and excellent rooms. The desk staff is extremely efficient and helpful. Though this is noted as a business hotel, the proximity to the “tube” makes it very accessible for touring London.

I would also recommend a visit to the Museum of London. Very well designed and gives a wonderful overview of the history of the city.

Put up the extra money to fly into Heathrow. The time it saves compared to flying into Gatwick or Stansted is well worth it!

In April our London trip took us to Paris. To see a friend, we hopped on the Eurostar train. Two hours later we walked around Paris taking in the sights and snacking on pate, sipping wine and feasting on desserts. In London we stayed at the Sofitel/Heathrow, which cut the airport to hotel travel time to 5 minutes. In town on our way to the Tate Modern to see the Damien Hirst exhibit, we walked through Borough Market, sampling English, French and Spanish cheeses, Middle Eastern sweets and fresh-from-the-ocean shellfish. That was a great trip!

My favorite travel tip for London is to do your homework ahead of your visit. There are many websites offering discounts to attractions, for example. Make sure you have downloaded the app to your mobile device/phone for the London underground and London street map – offline versions so you don’t incur roaming charges :)

A visit to the British Museum is a must – and it’s FREE!
