Triada Palm Springs
The Triada Palm Springs in Palm Springs, CA

Following a multimillion-dollar renovation, Triada Palm Springs (a member of Marriott’s Autograph Collection) has been reborn after a nearly three-decade hiatus. The owners hired an architectural historian to research the property in order to restore it to its former glory. On the other side, it now gives off a modern, Mediterranean-villa vibe, albeit in the desert.

Triada Palm Springs
Spanish colonial architecture

Triada’s Spanish colonial architecture was worth preserving and pays homage to the golden days of when Palm Springs was Hollywood’s playground. Past guests here include Howard Hughes, Elizabeth Taylor (in fact one of the hotel’s largest suites where she stayed is named in her honor) and Lana Turner, among others.

These days, Palm Springs hosts plenty of conferences and social functions, but it still gets its share of celebrity visits, as well. Ask anyone in town and they’ll point out Triada and its recognizable, beautiful façade—but its rebirth as a casual luxury resort is earning it accolades, as well. Consultation with the area’s historical society and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation was necessary during the property’s renovation.

Lobby

Lobby
The quaint lobby provides air conditioned comfort with cushy seating areas. Stay hydrated at the fruit-flavored water station across from reception. Guests with pooches can snag one of the free dog treats to keep Fido happy. Spanish colonial artwork and tiles line much of the public areas.

Outdoor fire pit

Numerous quiet corners and small sitting areas provide great places to kick back and relax, including the dome in the lobby with a hexagonal private space beneath and outdoor fire pits throughout.

Dining
Iluminara restaurant serves all meals either in the lobby’s dining lounge or outdoor on the poolside terrace. With the Triada’s new affiliation as part of the Marriott family, Gold and Platinum Elite level guests enjoy the option of complimentary breakfast.

Happy hour
Happy hour at the pool bar is where most people congregate. Smiling staffers serve as many as locals as guests, especially during these evening hours.

Rooms
Accommodations are spread across three separate buildings, which go by the names “heart,” “mind” and “soul” (Corazon, Mente, and Alma) and are separated by metal gates. Even the hotel’s name Triada, which stems from the term triad, pays homage to these three distinctive sections.

Guest room

The resort boasts a large collection of suites in varying sizes and shapes. Most are located in the Mente section, but many guests prefer the larger rooms and suites in Corazon because they feature outdoor terraces.

All rooms feature air conditioning and views of the gardens or pool areas. As much as the public areas feature historic elegance, the guest rooms showcase a more contemporary look with colorful fabrics that vary by building. Corazon rooms have warmer hues, for example, while Mente rooms have rich blue overtones.

Suite living room

All rooms feature tile floors, gorgeous fabric headboards, bedding wrapped in hanging canopies of linen, thick duvets, and plump pillows. Bedside iPhone-docking stations are a sign of the times. Desks and flat-screen cable TVs are in all rooms, and many feature kitchenettes with dining tables. The property’s resort fee includes the use of wireless high speed internet and parking. Instead of in-room minibars, guests can place a call to reception to order items on request at any time of day or night. Bathrooms are bright with large glass-enclosed shower stalls, thick towels, Spanish tiles on the wall, makeup mirrors, and bright vanities with Essential Elements toiletry products.

Pool area

Two swimming pools are ringed with padded lounge chairs. One pool features fresh water while the other has salt water. One clever feature: The metal hand rails are covered in a special protected layer to keep them from getting too hot in the desert sun. Mente’s pool area features a few hidden coves for shaded seating and dining plus two cabana areas looking down on the pool with daybeds and seating for almost a dozen.

The rest
There is no dedicated meeting space, but guests can convene in the lobby or ask to have some of the seating rearranged. A small business area on the second level looks down over reception. Weddings and social functions are popular in the small garden courtyard and are often booked with the adjacent suite as a place to gather or get ready.

Open 24 hours a day, the fitness room features modern equipment to keep pool bodies in shape.

This is the kind of hotel restoration that makes everyone happy. The new Triada blends historic elements with modern features that today’s travelers will, I think, appreciate. Ask to see some of the hotel’s commemorative photographs and pretend like you’re hob-knobbing with the Hollywood elite here.
