AA potential holiday pilot shortageThe news outlets jumped all over American Airlines this week and instilled fear into many travelers, including JohnnyJet.com readers.

A quick recap: There was a computer glitch, which allowed American to give too many pilots time off in December. So if a pilot asked for the holidays off, the request was most likely granted. Supposedly, as many as 15,000 flights between December 17 and December 31 didn’t have pilots assigned but American quickly offered 150% pay and yesterday said, “We are pleased to report that together, American and the Allied Pilots Association have put that worry to rest to make sure our flights will operate as scheduled. By working together, we can assure customers that among the many stresses of the season, worrying about a canceled flight won’t be one of them. In short, if Santa is flying, so is American.”

I have two tickets booked on American during those dates and I’m not worried. However, I will keep an eye on them. If I hadn’t already booked my Christmas flights and if I didn’t care about miles or have elite status on AA, I would probably book with another carrier if the flight was the same price and time “just in cases” (as Aurelia says in the movie Love Actually).

BTW: If you haven’t booked your holiday tickets yet, here are my 10 ways to find cheap Christmas flights.
