More than half of Americans didn't take a trip longer than four days last year (micro-cations)

How long was the longest trip you took last year? According to the results of Allianz Global Assistance‘s 2019 Vacation Confidence Index (VCI), Americans are taking shorter trips than they used to. More than half (57%) of all those surveyed said they did not take a leisure trip longer than four nights in the last year.

Meanwhile, 72% of Millennials (aged 18-34) took at least one trip of four nights or fewer, which Allianz calls a “micro-cation,” and 69% of Gen X-ers (35-54) and 60% of Baby Boomers (55+) claimed the same. Among all those responding, 25% (and 29% of Millennials) took at least three micro-cations over the last year.

In the VCI, Allianz also asked why its respondents are moving toward micro-cations. About a third (32%) said they were drawn to shorter trips last year because it was easier to take time off work for shorter periods, another third (32%) said they didn’t need more than five nights for the purpose of their specific trip(s), 26% said they preferred to take more frequent shorter trips than fewer longer trips, 19% said they didn’t want to spend money on longer trips, and 10% reported finding it easier to find a travel companion for a shorter trip.

“The days of the ubiquitous week-long summer vacation may be disappearing, but we’re happy to see that Americans, especially Millennials, are eager to travel more frequently,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications at Allianz Global Assistance USA. “The rise of micro-cations may also lead to increased interest in visiting vibrant domestic locales over exotic, far-flung destinations. Whether traveling for two nights or two weeks, travel insurance can protect you, your luggage and your vacation investment.”
