PicForNewsletterPhoenixFeb28200829_edited_editedTravelers are naturally curious creatures so when we see a crowd and hear loud noises coming from said crowd, we tend to migrate towards the action. That’s not a smart thing to do anywhere but especially in foreign countries. If you see any kind of demonstration, stay away because unfortunately, the reality is that things could turn violent…and quickly.

According to the UK’s Foreign Travel Advice presently, “there have been violent demonstrations in a number of Brazilian cities including Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Recife, Brasilia and Belo Horizonte; these are likely to continue in the coming days due to the current political situation; avoid demonstrations, monitor local media and follow the guidance of local authorities.” Similar situations are also happening right now in Zimbabwe and Greece.

To get a heads-up on where demonstrations are occurring before you travel, read or watch the local news, get alerts from informative places like the UK’s Foreign Travel Advice, or just Google the word “demonstrations” plus the name of the place you are visiting.

Yes indeed, public gatherings in general, as Americans (as many tourists) are often spotted right away
and may be singled out. I was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in support of Desert Storm in 1991 and was
downtown when I noticed a gathering at the public square … seeing I was American, I was ushered
(?pushed) to the front. It was public execution day and this one was a beheading. Extremely unpleasant
to watch and something that will be stuck in a dark crevice of my mind until my final days…
