American Express offers some of the best luxury credit cards to help elevate your travels but also has some of the best cards for groceries to help you earn rewards on everyday purchases. But they also have good options for casual travelers who want a low or no annual fee option. And while there are several co-brand airline and hotel cards, there are several options to fit both the casual and frequent travelers’ needs.

Use the best American Express Cards to see the world and earn rewards on everyday expenses. The Platinum Card® from American Express.

Best American Express Credit Cards

You may focus on getting cards that earn Membership Rewards® points. Any card that earns these points lets you transfer them to over a dozen airline partners at a 1:1 ratio. However, be aware of how long it takes to transfer American Express points to travel partners.

Amex also offers several co-brand cards for airline and hotel partners and cash back options. Hopefully, this review can help you find the best option that works for you.

The Platinum Card from American Express

The Platinum Card® from American Express is one of the best premium cards you can get. It’s best for frequent flyers and people who stay at hotels because of these benefits:

  • Transfer points on a 1:1 basis to airlines and hotel partners
  • Airport lounge access (Centurion, Priority Pass (enrollment required), Delta Sky Club, and others)
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee credit
  • Terms apply

Earn 5x Membership Rewards® Points for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel, up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year, and earn 5x Membership Rewards® Points on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel.

You can earn 5x points on plane ticket purchases, which is double the amount most cards earn. Your points are most valuable when transferring to 1:1 airline transfer partners including Delta, Emirates, and British Airways. It’s also one of the best metal cards.

This card also provides Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status (enrollment required).

Additional Perks

Cardholders can get $200 back in statement credits each year on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts® or The Hotel Collection bookings with American Express Travel when paying with their Platinum Card®.

Also, get up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year in baggage fees and more at one select qualifying airline.

If you ride Uber or use Uber Eats, this credit will make you happy. Cardholders can enjoy Uber VIP status and up to $200 in Uber savings on rides or eats orders in the US annually. Uber Cash and Uber VIP status is available to Basic Card Members only.

Plus, American Express has expanded The Centurion® Network to include 40+ Centurion Lounge and Studio locations worldwide. Now there are even more places your Platinum Card® can get you complimentary entry and exclusive perks.

Terms apply. Enrollment may be required.

New The Platinum Card from American Express Benefits

There’s also a new digital entertainment credit. Cardholders can get up to $20 in statement credits each month when you pay for eligible purchases with The Platinum Card® from American Express at your choice of one or more of the following providers: Peacock, Audible, SiriusXM, and The New York Times. Enrollment required.

In addition to enjoying TSA PreCheck or Global Entry access, cardholders can also enjoy CLEAR perks. Cardholders can use their Card and get up to $179 back per year on their CLEAR® membership. Terms apply.

Another exciting new benefit is the ability for cardholders to enjoy up to $25 back each month on select Equinox memberships when you pay with your Platinum Card®. This amounts to up to $300 annually. Enrollment required.

There is also a $155 Walmart+ credit to enjoy. This covers the cost of a $12.95 monthly Walmart+ membership with a statement credit after you pay for Walmart+ each month with your Platinum Card. Cost includes $12.95 plus applicable local sales tax.

American Express Gold Card

Earn up to 4x Membership Rewards® points on dining at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets with the American Express® Gold Card. Cardholders earn 4x points on restaurant purchases, including takeout and deliveries. Cardholders also earn 4x points on the first $25,000 spent each year at U.S. supermarkets, then 1x per $1. Flights booked directly from the airline or on AmexTravel.com earn unlimited 3 points per $1. All non-bonus spend earns 1 point per $1.

This is the next-best Amex alternative to the Platinum Card if you prefer lifestyle rewards to only travel rewards. For instance, you get a $10 monthly dining credit for select merchants ($120 total, enrollment required). The annual fee is a more reasonable $250 and there are no foreign transaction fees (See Rates & Fees).

Here is why we think the American Express Gold Card is worth the annual fee.

Your points are most valuable when booking award flights on AmexTravel.com or transferring to the 1:1 Membership Rewards airlines and hotel transfer partners.

Uber Perks

American Express® Gold Card cardholders can also get up to $120 in Uber Cash annually. Plus, you’ll earn 4x Membership Rewards® points for each Uber Eats purchase on your card. To use this perk, simply add your card to your Uber account and you’ll automatically get $10 in Uber Cash each month in your Uber account for U.S. Uber Eats orders or U.S. Uber rides. Any unused Uber Cash expires at the end of each month (it does not roll over to the next month).

This is one of the best credit cards to use for Uber Eats.

Cardholders also get up to 12 complimentary months of Eats Pass when you subscribe with your American Express Gold Card. That’s a value of up to $119 annually (based on the $9.99 monthly price over 12 months). With the Uber Eats Pass, you can get unlimited $0 Delivery Fees and 5% off orders over $15 at eligible restaurants. Note that taxes and service fees may apply and do not count toward the order minimum.

This benefit applies only in the U.S. on U.S. orders at eligible restaurants and on eligible restaurant purchases.

Enrollment is required by 12/31/2021. After that, the Uber Eats Pass will begin auto-billing 12 months after your enrollment in this offer, at the then-current monthly price. Learn more about the Uber Eats partnership for more information.

New American Express® Gold Card cardholders can earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $4,000 on eligible purchases within the first 6 months. Also, Rose Gold is back! Cardholders can choose between Gold or Rose Gold.
