Bring extra water when you hike

Keeping hydrated is important in all contexts (including when you fly), but especially when you’re being physically active. Like when you go hiking. Simply put, it’s hard to overstate the importance of bringing water when you hike. Last week, the State Department tweeted a reminder to bring extra water when you hike—more than you might think to bring—just in case there’s an emergency:

It’s simple advice, but in an emergency it could save your life. As for how much water exactly you’ll need, REI says in a good post on hydration that it “depends on a number of factors, such as the activity you’re doing, intensity level, duration, weather, your age, your sweat rate and your body type. A good general recommendation is about a half liter of water per hour of moderate activity in moderate temperatures. You may need to increase how much you drink as the temperature and intensity of the activity rise. For example, strenuous hiking in high heat may require that you drink 1 liter of water or more per hour.”

    I recently had a dear friend die due to dehydration while hiking in the hills around Malibu. He was the healthiest guy I knew and probably thought he would be ok after having gotten lost and used up his water. Sadly,, he was wrong.
